Tournament last night - Problem...

I played in a $20 entry 9 Ball tournament last night. It was a short race to 5, and it had a calcutta. It filled with 16 players.

I ended up taking 3rd, and lost twice to the winner of the tournament. First time, we went hill-to-hill, he hadn't broke very well until the last rack, and he broke the balls and ran out on me for the win.

The second time, he went up 3-1, I got it back to 3-3, and I got on the hill, with him tying it up again. The last rack was a little tricky, and I hooked him on the one with the 2 sitting almost in the pocket. He kicked at the one ball and this is what I was left with (3 pages of layouts):

I could not see many options other than using the 4 to tie up the 8 ball, which would give him ball in hand (which it did), and he got a good breakout, but just barely had room going by the 8 to shoot the 2. He got on the 3, and then lined up for the 4-9 combo for the win.

I thought about trying to just graze the 2, scratch in the side, and set
the 2 against the rail with the 2's edge even with the side. This was my only other option I saw at the time.

how about going 5 cussions and hit the 1?

mmm hard.. i cant really find a good option, that he wont be able to runout. i wouldnt have tied the 4 with the 8 (to close to the 9 for the combo) I probably would have kicked the 4 ; 2 cussions to put it against the 9 (in between lower left pocket and the 9) . there he cant pot the 4 (9 is in the way), and he cant pot the 9 (8 is in the way)...

Could you see enough rail to kick the one ?
How much of the 4 could you hit, enough to punt it off the rail up behind the 9?
Dangerous to put the 4 north of the 9, made for a short out.

I couldn't unless I shot a fairly soft masse' shot, and the guy I was playing would be out anyway if he had a shot at the 1. It did run through my mind.

Upon reflecting back, I probably should have tried to marry the 2 against the rail even with the side pocket, considering that shooting the 2 uptable past the side pocket MIGHT have given him a problem, especially with having to get on the 3 ball OR ELSE he would had to brteak out the 2 with ball in hand on the 1, but if I didn't shoot that shot PERFECT, he would have gotten out too. Jeesh, I thought I had him when I hooked him behind the 3 uptable, and would have a 1 ball shot after he kicked. The english on the cue, just kind sngged it up behind the 2 (on the other side of the side pocket, and nudged it to the other side of the side pocket staying behind it ...

We had 2 hard fought matches, both going hill-to-hill.

Good thought, puttin th 2 on the point. I think that would have been the best option (easiest to execute).

this option works but i would have niped the 2, put it on the rail and give ball in hand.

Yes, it was. Bill Parsons won it (I lost 2 hill-to-hill matches to him, broke and ran the first hill-to-hill, and the object of this thread was the last game in the 2nd hill-to-hill match). Bill double dipped Marshall in the final.... lol
