Tournament Payout Question

I'm just wondering if there are any guidelines that are generally followed when calculating the payouts in tournaments. Say for example you have a little $10 entry fee handicapped tournament that draws about 20 people on average (no money added, but 100% payout), and you want to pay 3 places. What would be an average percentage breakdown for the payouts in a tournament like that? I'm just curious because we have a weekly tournament like that in my area where it seems that the payout split changes every week (percentage-wise), and sometimes it gets pretty... well, let's just say weird.

Thanks,
Aaron

Maybe 50, 30, 20 .

Bah! You guys are crazy.

Everyone knows the answer is 50%/30%/20%.

:D

(or slightly alternately, 50/35/15, or 60/30/10. Do what works for you and your players.)

Thanks everybody! I don't think anyone's actually complained about the inconsistent payouts yet, but it eventually will raise suspicions if player A gets $120 for winning one week, but then player B only gets $110 for winning with the same number of players the next week. Better to use something consistent like 50/30/20, or the chart Tom supplied.

Thanks again,
Aaron
