Tournament Payouts and Calcutta Payouts- Question

I have a question regarding tournament payout percentages and calcutta payout percentages.

My question is this....with a tournament field of 40 players, what might be considered "standard" payouts in both the tournament fund and the calcutta fund. When I say standard, what I am meaning is the percentages, depth of payout into the field, etc.

My personal thought is that with 40 players, paying out top 8 in the field and top 6 in the calcutta would be fine. If you view that differently, give me your thoughts.

But I am looking at the percentage breakdown by spot finished in that top 8 (tournament payout) and/or top 6 (calcutta payout).

What level of players are we talking about?

Is this a fun APA bunch, a die hard "we play to win money" bunch?

Tournament payouts

I have been helping out with a weekly tournament at the local watering hole. The only issue the owner and I differ on is payouts. How do you decide what percentages to payout and what percentage of the field?

Top 8 is about right for the $ entry purse in a 40 player field, and either the top 6 or 8 for the Calcutta purse, which in many cases exceeds the entry $ purse.

When paying 6 the breakdown might be roughly 40%, 25%, 15%, 10%, 5%, 5%.

If paying 8, roughly 35%, 22%, 14%, 9%, 6%, 6%, 4%, 4%.

It’s really up to the tournament organizer and/or TD. Some like to go top heavy mainly reward the top finishers and some like to go deeper in the field and pay out more players. There are no set guidelines for payout breakdowns.
