Why is it almost weekly I hear someone complaining about not having a tournament to play in and then...a tournament comes around and THEY NO SHOW! I watch tournament directors try to get support from poolroom owners and their response seems to be the same as if you asked them to empty the till!
WITHOUT support from the PLAYERS & ROOM OWNERS, get use to staying home and asking "whatever happened to ^^^^^^ tournament.
I must tell you ...I don't eant to hear I don't have the cash to enter, the competition is to tough, it's to far to go...the added isn't worth it etc etc
Pool is , in my opinion, DYING the SLOW DEATH because of nothing more than APATHY!
I fell better.....

Pool's been dying a slow death since the 70's. Had a brief time in the 80's when tcom out that it was popular with kids. Now kid's aren't playing again by and large which means as the current crop of the 80's kids who still play grow older the amount of players continue to shrink.

Not to mention all the home's with tables that are the primary place people practice instead of in a room.

Tournament Rants

I forgot another of my favorite rants...hold a toournament and then make sure that to qualify to play you can't know which end of hte cue to use or your to good

LOL!! Sorry, couldn't help it. We used to put up signs a month before a tournament, right by the door, so you couldn't miss it with a pop gun. Guys would walk in the first day, look around with a surprised look on their face, and say: "Is there a tournament today??"

Many players are killing the tournaments themselves.

Some make excuses not to play, so the field doesn't get filled.
If playing, some refuse to eat and drink anything at the host room.
I've seen some bring in their own food and drink.
As soon as they get knocked out, they run for the door and refuse to hang around and spend a dollar or two.

A host room gives up a lot of table time to host a tournament. Also, a lot of the time, it is the room owner providing the added money for the tournament. I don't think it is unreasonable for them to expect to make a little of that money back via food and drink.

My suggestions:
If you are in a tournament, support the room by spending a few bucks, before you leave.

If you don't feel you are good enough, at least go to the room, watch for a while, and spend a couple of bucks to show the room owner you appreciate what they are doing. JMHO.

Thats good advice. Rep for you.:)

I have a monthly 9-Ball tourney at my pool hall. $75 entry fee and that includes your table time. I add $1000.00 to the pot as well as spend $500 on food to give away to the players and spectators while the tourney is going on. We haven't had a huge turnout(15-28 players) but we have a lot of fun doing it and everyone has a great time. I spend $1500 out of pocket and don't expect to get most of it back, but I enjoy having the competition in the room. I did have a bar with only 3 bar tables in it(I have a hall with 38 tables now) but we used to add $5000 to the pot there and would have 50-75 players.
As a pool player and/or a pool room owner, get out and promote the sport when you can.

Race2-9 I don't know where you are in Texas, but the weekend before last there was a 9ball tourney in Waco. There was about 40 players. And I'm pretty sure there will be another one next month. If you can make it come on down. I think AZ member Bigtruck runs it.

Here is the thread so you can look at it and get the info, if you are able to make it.

If you look in the Tournament Announcements there are lots of tourneys to play in.

Tourn Rant

Thanks for the replies. I agree and do promote the game and tournaments as often as possible. I just get fed up with people complaining and yet they are a major portion of the problem.
thehole: Thats great that you have the tournaments, hope you get a great turnout!
Orangecrush: thanks for the info

Pool Dying a slow death? Not around here, around here there is at least 5 weekly tournaments( I know there are more, these are just the ones I frequent), we have 3 long running leagues(that have ever increasing numbers) and a new one getting off it's feet this year.

You can't throw a rock down the street without hitting a good pool player. Maybe you need a real winter down there or something.

Thats because alberta is the pool capital of canada, wicked players come from there ,like myself .lol

a problem i see with the smaller non handicap tournerments is that once several good players decide to make it thier breadmoney, they get this sense of "oh im not donating to that degenerate" and refuse to play.

on the flip side, with some handicap rules in tournerments, the weight puts too much pressure on the better player and they stop playing because they have to give up too much weight for them to consistantly cash.

the biggest problem with both of these factors is that it shrinks the field which shrinks the prize pool. And noone wants to win a tourney and win 40 dollars do they?
