Here in west michigan tornaments that are advertised as starting at 1pm rarely start before 2pm without a calcutta. Is it like this all over or just in this region???

thanks

A good TD will make sure they start on time. If the players figure they can show up late and still get in, they will. If they find out that 10 minutes late means you didn't get in, they will show up on time. The only time I ever delayed the start was one Saturday in Raleigh where there had been a big accident on the Interstate coming into town and traffic was backed up for about an hour. I got calls from players stuck in traffic, and decide to hold up for them. Normally, if it says 1pm, I'm starting the draw to set up the charts at 1:05.

Late starting tournaments will often die. people have lives and often have to go to work in the morning the next day or if in the case of an afternoon tournament, have plans for the evening. If a tournament habitually starts late, people stop coming.

I think it's somewhat acceptable if a player knows he's going to be a little late (10-15min) to call the TD and let him know he's coming so he can be included in the draw. that way the tournament still starts on time.

Late starting tournaments are a pet peeve of mine. I'm usually early for a tournament and expect that people turn up on time. if not too bad so sad, see you next week.

I've never seen a tournament start on time...

lol I've always said that if they didn't cater to pool hustlers by starting tournaments in the afternoon...and finishing each day in the wee hours of the morning...then we would see some different stories.

You get a strong player who works and gets up every day at 5 or 6 in the morning...and schedule him at 8 am on Saturday against the 'pro' who did what pool hustlers do until all hours...well there would be many more 'upsets'...

I'll never understand why proprietors or others whine about why the general public doesn't support a tour...maybe they don't want to see the finals of a big tournament at 3 o'clock on a Monday morning...

If tournaments stated a Signup Time and a Signup Close time, there wouldn't be any problems.

Waisting time listening to players complaining why they were late is very disrespectful to the players that did make it on time and are waiting for the tounament to start. Is it really that difficult to say "Signups are closed"?

It takes time to complete the draw, write the names on the chart and make the table assignments.

There should be a 'players meeting' to go over tournament rules and answer questions and then make the match and table announcements.

RLW,

I live in west Michigan and it FUKKIN, bugs the shyt outa me when tournaments dont start on TIME!!!!

Ok the pool hall i frequent Q-stick cafe, has sunday tournaments and i swear TO GOD they couldnt get them started on time, if thier life depended on it.

They generally run about 45mins late, and thats just to start the calcutta!!!!! Then they have the player draw.

The same place does a Lakeshore tournament for A / B players and the last tournament started at about 230-3pm when its suppose to start @ 1pm !!!!!!

And it was all because the guy running the tournament has a Horse that was running late, and the guy he was staking ended up taking 4th.

I remember a post about tournaments that let guys show up late, and one guy mention'd that the tournament he ran, if someone showed up late, they started on the 1loss side, and couldnt take part in the Break N Run contest.

Personally if i was running a tournament,, and someone showed up late, they have two options,, start on the 1loss side, or pay double, and start on the winners side.

Or just tell them to show up on time, for the next tournament.

Or hold a vote to see if the person should be allowed into the tournament

Give 'em an inch and they will take a mile!

Or 5 minutes late today, 15 minutes next week, then this turns into an hour the week after that, etc.

Around here the players who regularly showed up on time got fed up with this. We changed things so our tournament starts at 7:00 PM period. (Start drawing numbers for names and filling out bracket sheet.)

If you are not there by 7:00, you don't get to play in the tournament, no byes are left for late players either.

Everybody *now* seems to be able to show up before 7:00! Amazing....

As i am drinking my third cup of coffe this am and can barely keep my eyes open reading this forum while i'm at work this early am--i have to sigh...

why-cause i went to a tourney which i goto most every sat nite and it supposed to start at 8 but never starts to 830 + and last night started at 9:15... Well, i ended on the losers side and was a match away from money but it was 130 am dammit... i drew an 'a-' player- the best in the poolhall <even though he lost one to get on the loser side-he has to give alot of weight in his handicap> by then i'm watching my clock, saying i have to get up in 5, 4- 3 hours to goto work.. my heart wasn't in it and should have run out 3 times and would have beatn him... BUT again-it was too damn late as i had also went to work at 630 am the morning of-worked to 530, then went home, grabbed my sticks and went to the tourney...

they let the local buddies "call in" their names and then we wait till they show... sometimes we get started without but then have to wait as they are still on first match kinda thing...

Then there's the players that just hang with their freinds and are clueless their match opponent is waiting for them--- last night it was like 35 minutes before 2 guys paired up...

I will still go as the payout is good and the players are some of the best around my parts and i have advanced my game playing them-- but i knoww in my heart if i work 630 am the next morning i subconscientously lose so i can get some sleep...

Now this is an open type tourney but handicapped... Now i also hit the APA stuff..... now this usually starts pretty close on time but what ERKS ME MORE than ever is they run qualifier rounds for the regionals during the tourne and all the time it seems someone i am waiting on to play is in one of these things... they don't go real quick either... i've waited almost 2 hours couple times-- then i'm cold...

So thanks for lettin' me vent on this tired morning...

Late starting tournaments

We have all suffered with them in the past.

Even the big ones that start on time (2 pom) with calcutta, and then by the time calcutta is over, the first matches don't start until 5:30-6 pm..

What I don't like about 3 day tournaments, is that the last 3-4 matches are scheduled for Sunday, and they don't begin them till 3-4 pm, with breaks inbetween, so it ends up running real late on Sunday night when they could have been done by 9 pm at the latest.

There is one Saturday night tournament here though that starts at 7 every week, and if you are 5 minutes late, you are out. They do pretty well with there tournament every week having from about 18-30 players every week.
