Tournaments and Employees

I can not tell you how many time I have called about a Tournaments cross town, and the guy or gal on the phone has ZERO INFO.

You can try checking the pol room's website if they have one instead. I know my daytime countergirl (18 year old no pool player) won't be of too much help other than what I have written down behind the counter or posted on my website but works hard and doesn't spen all day hitting balls but rather does all that I ask her to do for the room for just minimum wage. My night guy on the other hand can tell you eveything you need to know as he is a great player and avid fan of the sport himself. Anyhow, that is why I post my tournament info on my website: www.sandcastlebilliards.com.

I figured this was the best place to post this.

Room owners- when you are having a tournament or an event at your room, PLEASE make sure your employees know about it and can answer questions about it.

Several times I have heard by word of mouth about a tournament, called the room, and the employees answering the phone knew absolutely nothing about it. Then I sit on long distance while they go to find out about it and then get tied up with another customer and forget about the phone call. Needless to say, one less customer.

Yeah. Excellent point. Another one that happened to me recently. I showed up a little early and there's about 4 guys there that look like they might play in the tourney. I start warming up with one. While we're practicing the phone rings and the girl answers and I hear "There's only two players here. Yep, probably not."

This happens 5 more times before she says that since nobody showed there wouldn't be a tournament. By my math that's 9 or 10 players. Funny how the tournament kinda died shortly thereafter.

Obviously she just didn't want to deal with it and wanted to get out of there early.

I told the owner, but he didn't seem to care. Funny how the room is no longer there either.

Thanks for this reminder Neil. This is a good point. Owners should insure that a clear, consistent, and correct answer is given to a common question like this. If that means providing a current "cheat sheet" to a casual non-pool-playing employee, then so be it.

:clapping: Good point! I showed up for a tournament one time and was an hour early and the worker didn't know anything about it, she was vaguely aware that there was suppose to be one. Left me a little nervous since I was from out of town and had driven 200 miles to get there and had called ahead to sign up. And since it was mainly locals, there weren't very many people there yet either.

By the way, thanks room owners for hosting the tournaments in the first place!

Bravo! Good point. In the tournaments I run, each of my employees are required to get a certain number of players in the tournament. They then receive a small bonus for reaching their goal. It ensures the employees know about the tournament and that there will be a full field. Plus, if you don't at least like pool you don't belong working for me. ;-)

Make a deal with you.

Spend some money in the room.....if it's enough we'll train our help regarding tournaments.
