A} [Spiritual] Self Expression - Expressing (or demonstrating) whatever amount one possesses of a given quality. Examples are “calmness” if one is nervous or upset during a match or maybe “courage” if one feels intimidated for any reason. This spiritual maneuver creates a menu of positive qualities to be drawn upon at will. An “unending well” of this magnitude is impossible to judge the value of and cannot be contained to only one area of ones life.
B} {Mental] Poise – Focusing on only one shot at a time is achievable when running a mental program. Thinking before every shot the same routine, which is, CONCENTRATE on exactly what you need to do to accomplish in this one shot (as if every shot was going from the eight to the nine for perfect position), then
COMMIT to shooting this one shot as perfectly as one possible can, and finally, act with the COURAGE to shoot {stroke} the shot as beautifully as a single note being struck on the harp of an angel!
C} {Physical] Relaxed Concentration – Listening to, and being sensitive enough to react to, the body’s ability to perform at levels that defy explanation is the Zen of performances of expert levels of skill under pressure situations with seeming effortlessness. Having already run a mental program and having an exact picture of what to do you are able to isolate the exact speed, tip position and follow through required then act upon that single solitary stroke of the pendulum arm engulfed completely in the present moment. Not in the present moment of “trying” to make a shot but in the subtleness of allowing a purposeful, exact execution of a pre-shot routine to flow born of long hours of repetition and learning finally ending in the sublime experience of a shot being played with an exactness that the player truly and secretly hoped would happen. Allowing performance to flow from ones body through relaxed concentration not only requires virtually no “effort”, these experiences actually create energy for the shooter and an accompanying sense of peace and calmness. The body is free to act with uninhibited fluidity and confidence. Power and accuracy comes from my closed bridge. Touch and consistency comes from the set, pause and finish stroking system.

This brief and limited writing on the “tri-pillar” performance strategy is meant to provide one with a working map or plan to enable and encourage the full expression of oneself through billiards excellence. It should be noted that each category is a complex ideology in their prospective disciplines. Much learning must happen to effectively embrace internally then ultimately direct externally these values.

Each area named (the A, B, & C sections) are a collection of various works strung together in a way as to create a powerful symbiotic approach to simply, first, put yourself into the correct head/heart space to play, it then helps you to have a consistent and repeatable method to plan, prepare and execute each shot with an individuals maximum focus available to him/her. The different sources for these various works include authors such as Tim Galloway; The Inner Game of Tennis, The Monk; Point the Way and others.
