I don't quite know where to begin here, but I used to be a cue collector. I didn't have a lot of expensive cues but let if suffice to say that I love 'em and I was always ordering or buying one. Just a few that I had that I can think of offhand:
Joss West
Szamboti
Klein
Jensen
Hill
Olney
Bautista
Omen
Frey
Dayton Rambow
Tony Bautista
Mike Pancerny
Rauenzahn
Most of these cues were sold or stolen. My Dayton Rambow style cue was my favorite in recent years. The Joss West was from back in the day. When I owned the Szam I had no idea what I had. It just didn't suit me as well as the Joss West so down the road it went.
So the Dayton Rambow cue was stolen. I ordered or already had a Dayton Ebony sneaky. Minimal but nice ringwork. 59" as is my preference. 19 oz. Wood to wood joint with a radial pin and a phenolic collar. Older wood shaft with quite a few annular rings, maybe 15 or 20. The wood is a tiny bit darker than normal. Shaft weighs 3.80 and is 12.75mm. Ivory ferrule, which I am used to. Moori medium tip. I had a Moori soft and a sniper but changed them. Paul's modified pro taper. This cue is so sweet I can't play with anything else ! My friend who is a cue dealer borrowed it and said, that cue plays great ! Paul Dayton really has a fabulous taper. Another A player on my old bar team borrowed it and didn't miss a single ball with it for weeks. Every league night he'd say, " did you bring that cue" ?
I'm lucky to have it. I wonder if I ever had Paul make me a high end cue again if it would play and hit like this one ? I see sneakys for sale by Paul for good prices and they don't sell right away. Now I understand they may not play like this one, or even that everyone might not like this one the way I do. I just know it has ruined me for other cues...lol.
Thanks Paul. You deserve more recognition. I know that I have told you twice that I was sending money to order another cue and didn't pull the trigger. I apologise but things happen. I had good intentions. In my humble opinion, Paul Dayton is the best kept secret in American cuemakers. He is still reasonable too. But the most important things about Paul's cues is the wood he uses and the user friendly proportions. The taper and the balance. Can't be beat IMHO...Tom
