have you noticed that espn has decided whenever the trick shot shows are repeated, they show them for the last half hour only. the original airing was one full hour, but the repeats are a half hour. also, while i'm on the subject, when espn tapes a match, a race to 7 in 9-ball, they have to go back to their facilitys and edit it down to fit an hour. the people editing it don't know anything about pool, and usually edit, the best parts! i long for the day, when they show LIVE! pool, without any cuts or edits, the entire match, the way it should be.

one thing i have to say is, why shorten the race (supposed to be 9, but it's 7 for tv matches) if you are going to edit it anyway??? Surely some of those racks are going to be text-book break and runs, edit those out, and show some safe battles and tough position shots every once and awhile...

Thanks

Jon

yeah and is it just me or does the pocket cam. piss you off?.. cant forget to mention the endless repeats also...

my understanding why TV matches are a race to 7 and not 9 when you dont see all of the match is simply that it takes too long for races to 9 and, therefore, the TV crowd would have to endure this.

WPBA TV rounds typically are 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00. crowds start to filter in around 1100 and the last match typically isnt over till 7:00-8:00. if it was a race to 9 it could be much, much longer.

i for one wouldnt mind it though.

I would disagree with this. Most of the time during taping is down-time.

6 more games would not really take long at all, relatively speaking.

Ever sit through a live match being taped for TV? It is agony. I don't know how the players can go through that and still shoot well. For one thing, there's cameras all over the place, moving around, and I'm sure being very distracting. The players are lit up by strong lights from all angles. Between games, the TV guys are doing their setup thing, and there's major delays getting every game rolling. All this completely destroys any chance at the match having a decent tempo and some sort of exciting atmosphere. Really sucks. I can understand why they'd limit the race. Either do that, or let the players play and force the TV guys to just live with it.

Editing For T.v.

 IN ORDER TO GET AIR TIME (GET THE SHOW ON ESPN) SOMEONE HAS TO SELL A SPONSOR ON THE IDEA THAT X NUMBER OF VIEWERS WILL TUNE IN AND OF THOSE PEOPLE X NUMBER OF THEM WILL BUY THEIR PRODUCT.

IF YOU NOTICE THE TIMES THAT MOST POOL STUFF IS ON IT IS AT ODD TIMES WHEN THE AIR TIME IS NOT EXPENSIVE. I DO NOT RECALL EVER SEEING POOL ON PRIME TIME EXCEPT WHEN WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS USED TO DO SOME COVERAGE.

WHAT WENT WRONG THERE WAS YOU HAD NO QUALIFIED POOL PLAYERS ABLE TO ANNOUNCE WITH ANY APPEAL AS THEY WERE ALL PLAYERS.
SO.......JOHN Q. PUBLIC NEVER REALLY CAUGHT ON TO POOL.

IF YOU DONT BELEIVE ME......PROVE IT TO YOURSELF....GO OUT AND ASK 100 PEOPLE TO NAME YOU THEIR FAVORITE POOL PLAYER AND I WILL BET UNLESS YOU ASK THE QUESTIONS INSIDE A POOL ROOM THE ONLY TWO NAMES YOU WILL HEAR ARE WILLIE MOSCONI OR MINNESOTA FATS. IF YOU DO HEAR ANY OTHER NAMES IT WILL BE OH YEAH PAUL NEWMAN OR TOM CRUISE.

SO NOW ESPN HAS ANNOUNCERS WHO ARE HORRIBLE FOR THE SPECTATOR WHO WOULD LIKE TO LEARN BUT AFTER A FEW MINUTES THEY SWITCH THE CHANNEL BECAUSE NO ONE IS HOLDING THEIR INTEREST.

THEN THERE IS ACCU-STATS WHICH HAS THE RIGHT IDEA BUT IS MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE AS ESPN......YOU HAVE SOME GREAT PLAYERS DOING THE COMMENTARY AND ARE ONLY CONFUSING THE AUDIENCE. THEY WON'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE PLAYER DOES AND EXPLAIN HOW AND WHY THEY DID IT. INSTEAD THEY TELL THE AUDIENCE WHAT THEY THINK THE PLAYER SHOULD DO AND THEN THE PLAYER DOES SOMETHING ELSE AND THEY HAVE TO BACKTRACK AND TELL THE AUDIENCE OH THYE PLAYER ELECTED TO DO THIS INSTEAD. 2 OR 3 OF THOSE AND THE SPECTATORS SWITCH THE CHANNEL BECAUSE IT IS TOO CONFUSING AND HARD TO FOLLOW.

SO.......THERE IS NO QUALITY FILM TO PRESENT TO A WOULD BE ADVERTISER AND SINCE THE TIME SLOTS ARE NOT PRIME YOU MIGHT AS WELL SHOW A RE-RUN AND CHOP IT UP TO FILL THAT TIME SLOT.

I'M SURE A LOT OF TIME THEY JUST SEND RAW FOOTAGE TO THE STUDIOS AND LET THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT.

UNTIL BETTER FILM IS PRESENTED TO THE NETWORKS YOU WILL NEVER SEE LIVE COVERAGE. IF THEY HAD FILM BEING GENERATED ON 3 TABLES AT THE SAME TIME 2 ANNOUNCERS COULD KEEP THE INTEREST UP BY PROVIDING CONTINUAL ACTION. OVERHEAD SHOTS WOULD SUFFICE FOR THE PUBLIC
