I try to have a tip for every customer, so a few year ago I bought a box of Triumph tips. They have the red tip pad glued on the back. No one has ever wanted to try one, and I never got around to trying one out for myself. Well, finally a customer looks at my available stock of tips and wants one. I rough it up, and I use the Loctite Gel (rubberized). Have been for years with excellent results. I leave my tailstock pressed up against the tip a few minutes like normal. When I remove the tailstock, and start wiping glue from the ferrule/tip. The tip pops off in my hand. I tried two more times with the cyno gel, but the same thing happened. I used West epoxy with no problem. Just a little longer wait time. My question is, does anyone else use these tips, and do they have the same trouble I had with the cyno? The tip played good so I will encourage future use. I was just wandering if this was a common problem with this backed tip. Thanks in advance for the help... Mikey:eek:
 
That's what they do. They pop off. You just have to get good surface prep and make sure you have plenty of glue.
 
If you do a search you'll find that the biggest problem is usually keeping the tip glued to the red pad. I've had many come off while trimming, or burnishing, but the pad stayed glued to the ferrule. If I put one on now (only to use up the ones I have left) I take the pad off, which isn't hard at all, usually pops right off with the tip of a razor blade, and sand flat the back of the leather, prime it, then just glue that on. After the batch is gone, I won't use another triumph again, not worth the headache. Your better off switching your customers to another tip, like a med. wizard. JMO

I feel the triumph is either the best or second best tip that Tweeten makes. I like them much better than either Lepros or Elkmasters. For super glues to work there must be moisture. The fiber pads are much to dry. When installing them I lick the back of the pad, just as I have to do with Moori's, dry off a little on my pants and then install as usual. The pads and tips are glued together with contact cement so it gets soft when it gets hot. I used to do like Dave. I would install, trim to fit and then burnish until the glue softened and remove tip and glue back on. I no longer do that. I just burnish a little at a time so that the glue doesn't get soft. What hurts them the most is that they aren't very popular so they sit around and dry out. I only use a box every two or three years so they get old. This is the tip that Chris Bartram uses by the way.
