Why is it that when I'm signed in and replying to a post, I get a screen that says I am not signed in? Then I lose my carefully written reply and have to start over.

has happened to me quite a few times as well....if it's a long post; I usually won't retype, and just forget about replying on the thread. Kind of a bummer, huh?!

No, I lost it and had to re-type it.
For some reason you have to check that "Remember Me" next to the login boxes.
If you forget to do that and get the same message, use the back button on your browser to get back to "reply to topic". You'll find your post intact there.
It's always safest to copy and paste it into an edit program, just in case, but checking "Remember Me" should take care of it.

Not sure why that's happening, but I started a thread about this a couple of days ago in NPR. It hasn't happened to me lately while posting though. Just browsing.
One thing you can do, if you are losing posts, is "Ctrl+A and Copy" your whole post before you hit submit. That's easier than using another program to write in. Then, if something goes wrong you can just paste the post back after you log in. Good advice for long posts even if you aren't having troubles, just in case they start.
Oh, and you should NOT have to click that "Remember Me" box. That is (supposed to be) for logging back in when you come to AZB next time. Not for staying logged into a single page during a session.
