If a guy's gonna hang a 314/2 on the front end anyway, is it really worth splitting hairs between a Schon, Joss, Mezz or (insert your recommended cue here)?

From what I can glean, things rank in importance starting with the tip, ferrule and joint downward with the butt contributing the least to a cue's characteristics. :shrug:

I can say from personal experience that I can't tell the difference between a Schon and Joss fitted with a 314/2. I'm not sure I would add a Meucci to the comparison though. At least not a modern Meucci.

Shaft and shaft parts play a much
larger part in how the cue feels when
it strikes the ball.

How the butt feels in your shootin'
hand can be very important for
some players. Different wraps,
different thickness can make a
difference in preference but I doubt
it makes a huge difference for
any one in shot making.

Among common cues the only characteristic that matters objectively (i.e., isn't a personal preference) is squirt. My playing cue has been through several butt/shaft combos as I've swapped each of them at different times for something I liked a little better. The current combo is a self-designed very-low-squirt shaft on a cheap Joss butt with a slightly mismatched joint diameter that I chose because it's wrapless, the joint threads match and it was handy.

If it felt OK and was low squirt I'd truthfully be happy with a piece of scrap lumber.
