Truth Be Told

I have created a Rating System for Pool that takes a different approach from what is typical. I use true, realistic, and meaningul statistics to derive a rating of a player's ability. It produces results that I have found to be quite accurate. My method for doing this involved a unique scorekeeping technique that is highly detailed, yet simplistic representation of each shot.

Some of those statistics include breaking % and shooting % and defensive play.

It's a project that I've been working on...

A Professional Pro Organization got wind of my work through a friend of mine, who runs a local paper here in town. They stated that they were going to create an Amateur Pool League. They expressed an interest in using my Rating System and its statistics. We have had multiple meetings in regards to it. They wanted to buy it from me. In review of the situation, I declined their offer and backed out.

Now, it appears that they may be trying to steal the idea from me.

I know things are bad with Professional Pool, but are things that bad?
I wanted to publicize this early. In case matters should escalate in any way.

Of course mistakes have been made. Hindsight it 20/20, can't change the past. Just wanted to make it known, and see if anyone had advice.

Thanks in advance.

If you believe it to be of some monitary value, and it must be if they were dicussing buying it from you, then you should take stronger steps than an internet post to protect yourself.

Get it Copywritten so it cannot be used without your consent, and vigorously pursue anyone who infringes it.

I for one, would like to see it in action. A standardized rating system would be good for the sport.

Just like I would say to people that have seen aliens.....PROVE IT!

There is a system that the Europeans use, called the PAT Test, or Playing Ability Test, for Pool and Snooker. The rater actually has to be certified, and then there are different levels etc. Maybe someone will chime in who is familiar with it.

I think a concrete handicap/rating system would help in Tourneys, but getting organizations like the APA or BCA or VNEA to adopt it would be tough. A top salesman/pro-player would be a huge help. Maybe after it was copywritten you could offer a percentage to someone who had the skills and connections to market it. Someone like a Charlie Williams for example. I'm not saying he's your man, it's just an idea...Tom

PAT or Player Ability Test has been a hot topic in my end. It is developed by 3 persons where they have created some books you must buy. The books includes a lot of different practicing exercises together with some tables where you could log you're results and progress.

The whole thing is meant to be implemented in the tourneys where players who has been working with PAT brings more value (a number tho be added in the total pot of ranking point available on each tourney) then players which has not.

It basically is like a martial arts thing where you have to go through a test and get qualified for a certain "stamp" / patch to wear on you're shoulder.

This "exercise" cost in the range $80-$100 per/test including the book.

Reactions in our system has been that players hate the whole thing, since it seems like everything is about money. You can qualify to be a instructor and in this way be able to do certification exercises, but this cost money as well. You need to "re-qualify" you're self which again cost money.
If a player don't quite get there to be called PAT 1 qualified, he has to pay for a new "test" and see how that one goes. If he makes it and would like to have his score registered on the PAT web page - it costs. So charge charge charge.

Some players have got the books to do some of the exercises but don't care about the money making threesome.

Hope it helped and if not have a look here :

Personally I don't see why one system should be forced on players as a training aid or ranking. Some like practicing their secret shot alone in a dark pool club, some reads books, some watch DVDs and some take classes.
I guess it's obvious that I'm not very fond of the implementation in our pool league.

Yes, I am already aware of the Copyright protections...
The potential thief is as well...

This system is sufficiently different enough from PAT. PAT in no way has influenced my Rating system at this time.

Delawho, I would love to be able to show it to you, but as has already been stated, it's best to ensure the proper levels of protection... So that will have to be on hold. ;(
