Try out this game

I'm in bed trying to sleep, and this idea just came out of nowhere for a new game.

1. Rack 14 balls (2 corner balls must be a solid), and put the 8 ball in the middle of the table.
2. Player that breaks uses a standard opening 14.1 break (2 OBs + CB must hit a rail).
3. Solids (1-7) are worth 2 points.
4. Stripes (9-15) are worth 3 points.
5. 8 ball is worth 5 points.

The order of balls pocketed is solid, 8, stripe. The incoming player always starts with a solid. The 8 is always spotted back to the middle of the table after being pocketed. If another ball is on the spot, then the 8 will be placed as close to that ball (without freezing) closest to the rack area.

A legal hit is one where the player at the table hits the ball that is on and either pockets it or drives it or another ball to the rail.

If a legal hit is not made, the other player has the option of taking the shot where the CB lies, or passing it back.

If the CB scratches or goes off the table, it's BIH in the kitchen. Any OB pocketed in this scenario would be spotted before the next inning.

If you commit any type of foul, then your opponent will receive points for the on ball. So if you are shooting a stripe and scratch, your opponent would receive 3 points added to his or her score.

Max points in a rack is 105 (not including points won by fouls). After all balls have been pocketed, a new game starts, and the first person to reach the agreed upon number of points is the winner.

The rack must be done in this order (S = Solid, T = Stripe)

ST
TST
STST
TSTST

Seems like a good idea, but please correct me if I didn't understand this part well:

A legal hit is one where the player at the table hits the ball that is on and either pockets it or drives it or another ball to the rail.

So, as long as you keep driving balls to the rail, the opponent doesn't get a shot regardless of whether you pocket them or not?

Don't think so. Is the same as in eight ball, 9 ball, 14.1, etc. Must either make a ball or drive one to a rail after legal contact to avoid a foul. It doesn't give you another shot.

I have another question. If first ball on each inning is a solid, what happens if there are no solids left on the table, only stripes? This is likely to happen is ost of the racks. Player makes a solid and then misses either the 8 or the stripe. that leaves more stripes on the table.

If no solids are left, then you would start with a stripe.

I've also edited the OP to include another rule on fouling.

Sounds somewhat similar to a 15 ball version of Bonus Ball except your Bonus Ball is hit second in the sequence.

I guess it would be a nice game :) It seems this forum needs a special thread, or even a section, dedicated to inventing new pool games. I read several versions only during the last few days, being the author of one myself.

So it's kind of a combination of snooker and 8-ball with a little 14.1 thrown in? Interesting idea. Have you tried playing it out?

Here's one thing I don't understand. You say every inning has to start with a solid. And the opening break has to start with a 14.1 style break. But the bottom two corners are stripes. So if someone plays a good 14.1 break and only leaves the two corner balls loose (if that), then the incoming player's on balls are all tied up in the rack. There's nothing to shoot for and any safety is a sellout.

Edit: So, shouldn't the corner balls be solids so that there's at least an opening shot or a reasonable safety after the break?

Edit 2: I'm also assuming that there is no "on" ball on the opening break. Otherwise you are "on" solids, playing a 14.1 break, but the two corners are stripes. So you can't play a classic 14.1 break. You have to come up with something wacky and probably break the rack wide open. I assume this is not the intent. Another reason the two bottom corners should be solids.

I have not tried it out, but I have a feeling it would be challenging.

Good catch on the rack. The bottom two corners should be solids, and I guess the rest of the balls really don't matter. I'll edit the OP.
