It's a carom game on a pool table... I know, but just read quickly anyway, I'll be brief.
The pockets are considered hazards, so you end up choosing paths that keep both object balls on the table. Not only are one-cushion shots excellent practice for all pool games, but it teaches you how to play multiple balls at once to get position for your next shot. The penalty for playing bad carom position means a ball will be trapped near a pocket, and you'll be forced to set up for a two-in-one pocket shot to reset the table and keep your run going. Or you can play precision and dig the balls out of the pocket from behind, with care.
This game is also an extremely good magnifying glass on the true precision of your stroke, specifically tip placement. If you have any type of shoulder movement or body English you will be way off on most of your shots. You will be surprised.
And finally this is a bit more fun than drills for some.
Play this for a while and then play 9-ball, 8-ball or one-pocket, and watch what you can do with safeties and advanced positions!
Give it a try. I play this all of the time now.
- White, red and yellow balls on the table.
- 1 point for every one-cushion carom you make. (More than one rail is allowed)
- No balls allowed in pocket.
- EXCEPTION: 3 points if you pocket both the red and yellow in one shot.
- Red and yellow spotted on head/foot spots. White is ball in hand.
