Trying different shafts

I have played pool for most of my 51 years and have been playing league pool for a couple of years now. I have a strong interest and love for pool cues in paticular as I have always loved woodwork. I have bought a couple of used cues recently as well as a beautiful new sneaky from Chad Carter. I had him make me a 30" 12.5mm shaft for this cue with a moori tip which is what I have been playing with. I am thinking about the possibility of trying different shafts with this cue to expereiment more with what I like and am curious if this is a reasonable approach of if the shaft and butt are too integral to experiment this way. This is what I am thinking of trying :
Predator Z shaft
Meucci Black Dot
Kersenbrock taper hopefully with very old wood (possible order from Ed Young)
I think I would want to get all of these in 30" 12.5 mm with Moori or Talisman tips and maybe ask Chad if he could get the predator and meucci shaft blanks and match the ringwork.

My question I guess is - is this worth doing or should I just keep buying and borrowing different cues in my quest for the holly grail.

Any input appreciated ... thanks.

magic wand

Scooter,

Let me start off by saying that I think you are wasting your time... There is no such thing as a magic wand. A pool cue is a pool cue. One may have different characteristics from another, but in the end it is nothing more than a tool. It is up to the person yielding the tool to produce great results. Before you even respond; YES, some tools are better than others. The fact remains that they are all made to do the same job. However, how well that job is done is ultimately up to the operator of the tool.

***If you'd like, I'd be happy to sign you up for the new cue I'm building. It will play the game for you. All you have to do is watch from the sidelines as every opponent you face is demolished. And, if you believe that, I can sell you some fairy dust to help you fly away as well.

I can appreciate your dilemma. There is much difference in shafts because of the shaftwood used, the different tapers, ferrules and tips.

I personally like the Kersenbrock taper because it produces a solid stiffer hit than found in the Mucci tapers. I do not care for your other choices but other players like them. I like the Moori tips best because they hit wonderful and are very durable.

If you would like to try one of my shafts you may return it if you do not like it: http://www.terminatorshaft.com/. I think you will like it :)

Good luck in your quest,

why does this offend

I am not sure why what i said that was so offensive. I am very happy with my game and am not looking for a magic wand. I also appreciate the handycraft that goes into cue making and assthetics. Are you telling me that it is wrong to explore the playability of cues? If you really think all cues play the same you can't be much of a player. I am an apa 6 and I have not lost this season so I am a decent player, though I would never claim to be a great one. I just happen to really like cues. I have played the game for over 35 years and don't need some idiot telling me not to look for a magic wand. I am just trying to find what I like, why is that wrong?? I hope all cuemakers are not all so threatened by that idea.

Thank you Arnot I will think seriously about buying one of your shafts. I was beginning to wonder if I had asked a stupid question.

its not the arrow its the indian. yes some shafts allow more action on the cue ball and have diferend feels that different people like. i have never shot with a predator shaft but know several people that really enjoy the way they preform. i have used shon, mcdermott (regular shaft), players, lucassi, all 3 meucci shafts and i so far like the meucci black dot the best. just a personal prefrence tho. many people on here will tell you meuccis are crap, they warp, and nothing but firewood but as far as my own experience with them i like em. i shoot my best with a meucci. but once again, everyone is diferent, and nobody can shoot decent without a decent stroke. thanks,
Jay

I would recomend trying differant cues that people you know have, if they have the shafts that you are courious about. Some of the shafts you mentioned can get rather pricey just to try to see if you like it.
All cues hit differant, but you can get an idea if you like a shaft or not, with it being on another cue.

What is a "Kersenbrock taper?" Is it similar to a parabolic?

I'm interested in hearing more about the Kersenbrock Taper as well. Anyone have any "blueprint" info on them such as measurements at 1" increments along the length of the shaft?
