GUINNESS 9-Ball Tour 2008 Kicks Off In Chinese Taipei
28 February 2008: After a successful inaugural season, pool fans will once again be treated an exciting showcase of pool action as the six-city Guinness 9-Ball Tour 2008 kicks off its highly anticipated second season in Taipei from tomorrow until 2 March 2008.

Organized by ESPN STAR Sports, Asia?s number one sports broadcaster, with Guinness as the title sponsor, fans can expect intense competition in the 2008 Tour, as the rest of Asia eagerly tries to redeem themselves following a clean sweep of the series by Chinese Taipei last year.

With the local contingent boasting of an intimidating line-up of Jung-Lin Chang (2007 Overall Tour Champion), Chia-Ching Wu (2005 WPA World Pool Champion), Pin-Yi Ko (2007 WPA World Junior Champion), Hung-Hsiang Wang, Pei-Wei Chang, and Ching-Shun Yang (2007 Tour Grand Finals Semi-finalist), it would seem that Chinese Taipei is determined to start the season strong in the hopes of sparking a repeat of last year's flawless performance

Meanwhile, the rest of the competition field will see Asia?s best players such as Indonesia?s top-ranked cueist Ricky Yang, perennial crowd-favorite Alex Pagulayan (2004 WPA World Pool Champion) and his compatriot Marlon Manalo (2006 IPT 8 Ball Championship runner-up) of the Philippines, all setting their sights on the 2008 season?s first trophy. Action in the group stage will begin on February 29 at the Taipei Gymnasium.

The players draw has resulted with the hometown bets bracketed in tough matchups. In Group F, Kaohsiung?s ?Son of Pool? Yang Ching-Shun will be testing the pocketing prowess of ?The Lion? Alex Pagulayan. In Group D, Chinese-Taipei?s teen wonder Ko Pin-Yi will need to be on top-form if he wants to advance past Marlon Manalo while Wu Chia-Ching will have his hands full as he begins his campaign against Ricky Yang in Group E. Over at Group A Chang Pei-Wei will go head on against Joven Bustamante, the overall top seed in the 2008 kick-off leg. In group B, Chinese-Taipei?s number one ranked cueist Wang Hung-Hsiang will clash versus Korea?s Ryu Seung Woo in their elimination round opener.

Other key matchups to look out for in the round-robin stages will be the epic battle against Chang Jung-Lin testing his skills against 2006 DOHA Games Gold Medalist Antonio Gabica as power-breaking Jeffrey De Luna takes on Thailand?s Nitiwat Kanjanasri.

In keeping with the goal of making the Tour better and more exhilarating, the organizers have adopted the 40 second shot clock rule and a race-to-nine format for all matches with a race-to-11 format for the final. This ensures a gripping and intense competition experience where only the most consistent and masterful performers get the chance to advance to the next round.

Mr. Harvey Davis, Senior Director, ESPN STAR Sports Event Management Group said, ?The Guinness 9-Ball Tour has firmly established itself as a gateway to world-class competition - offering young and up-and-coming players to shine against some of the region's best cuemasters - and we are proud to have been an instrumental part of unveiling these new talents last season. I?m confident the Guinness 9-Ball Tour 2008 will continue to contribute to the growth of rising Asian pool talent.?

Ms. Barbara Young, Category Director, International Spirits and Beer, Diageo Asia Pacific, said: ?We?re delighted to be partnering ESPN STAR Sports and the Asian Pocket Billiard Union again for the Guinness 9-Ball Tour 2008. Becoming a top pool player requires determination, master expertise, accuracy and consistency ? the very qualities we espouse when we make every pint of Guinness and of our goal to contribute to the growth of pool in Asia. Our consumers are looking forward to the Guinness 9-Ball Tour 2008 and we will be organising some exciting events and promotions throughout the tour.?

The Tour attracts Asia?s top cuemasters with Asian Professional Billiards Union (APBU) -sanctioned players from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Thailand, India, China and Chinese Taipei taking part. Winners of each leg will take home US$15,000 while the Grand Final Champion will walk away with US$36,000. The total prize money for this year?s Guinness 9-Ball Tour is US$320,000 and will feature a Grand Final in Jakarta for the Top 10 players in the overall Order of Merit.

Telecast of Asia's premier pool competition will be carried LIVE on STAR Sports with fifteen hours of exhilarating competition for this thrilling kick-off leg from February 29 to March 02, 2008. This year, STAR Sports will complement its live broadcast with a 30-minute preview programme before each leg.
