two new elk master 13mm tip boxes in a row very hard / old?

it wouldn't matter if they are new or old stock if they dont get hard over time in the box.

besides threads are not a question and answer thing for the op. they are something to open a discussion on the subject.
within that you can find your answer in most cases.

captain obvious above, yet if they are only shipping NOS, yes it would matter...

I emailed Tweeten last week with no response. Not the best customer service...

I use Elk Master tips and I buy a box at a time. They have never dried out on me and a box lasts years. I do float test them and throw away the floaters. I dry press mine, 1mm for 48 hours.

FTR, I installed a new Bulletproof Recoil Synthetic tip 2 days ago. So far I really like it. If this tip lasts without problems I’ll give away the rest of mine.

I will never go back to a layered tip. Layered tips drove me to Elk master.

I don't mind the Elk Master I just put on. It still needs a little more shaping to my liking. I was going to order a tube of Tweetens and found one in my case. It was still maluable and pretty sticky so I used it.

They are leather and they have a shelf life. It will get hard but I'm not sure you can save them.

It needs to be soaked again or moisturized. LOL

These are great tips and and the "go to" before the cheaper layered stuff.

There were older guys that would soak them in their special concoction.

Yeah... Leather gets old. That's why I have a 30yr old leather jacket, shoes and belts that are over a decade old.

Yesterday I played with a cue that I have played with in seven years.

So, how does leather get old?

It dries out.

Leather and wood are living things after the fact. I still condition my jackets and red wings. The leather seat in my car gets conditioned often. My patio furniture gets sand and nice new finish after every season.

Tips get hard if you’re just finding this out then you’re welcome.

I suggest to use either mink oil or leather conditioner on your leathers.. I dabble with leather goods, shoes and boots. It’s like a hobby of mine.

Funny stuff. Leather breaks down from getting wet and drying, not from being dry. If you are having problems with your tips having a shelf life, it is because they were stored in horrible conditions.

Wood and leather are, by definition, dead things. Trees and animals that wood and leather come from are living things.

If you are buying elkmaster tips and they aren't what you expect, it is likely due to them being an economy tip with poor process control.

leather can and does get old/rot just from excessive dryness. has to be the right amt. of moisture in the leather to make it last. you take any good leather product and stick it in a shed/garage for a few yrs. what you'll have is a crumbling pos.

what's 'reconstituted' leather? Elk Masters? wrong. No Tweeten tips are made this way. WHERE the fk do people hear this shit???? they use the same leather as Triangles/LePros. The difference is the tanning methods.
Aren't EMs glued together leather mix? With chalk added even.

why is everyone explaining how and why leather tips get hard in this thread when I didn't even ask this? just wondering if anyone has ordered a box of elkmasters lately and / or if anyone knows if they are only NOS these days?
Because this is the internet. People want to show you they know something.

I haven’t ordered a box of Elk Masters in years and have never heard of someone describing any new box of Elk Master as “hard” or “harder.”

I bought a box of Triangle tips recently and they are not brown like the old ones I have. They are blue color with a brown coating and are rock hard. More like a break jump tip than a shooter. I Used to love a good old Triangle tip but these are so hard I've had to cut them off because of complaints.
I picked up a some Ekmaster tips and found that they too are much harder than they used to be. More like a medium now. The original Elks were so soft that they were difficult to get a nice even cut on even with razer sharp tooling. Kind of like cutting a marshmallow.
The new ones are much harder and machine like a dream. I was told this is due to a change in the tanning process. I liked the Elkmasters actually but the Triangles are useless in my opinion.
