U.S.A vs Phillipines, the numbers

well i think we have forgotten that pool is the only sport that the phillippines has going for it....they arent a dominant figure in any other sport and probably never will be......it is funny how over there a whole country supports the sport of billiards but over here we cant even get some of the large corporations to contribute and why is that....cause there have been so many disreputable people associated with pool here ....don mackey cause the mens pro tour to disband, and then you have players getting busted for drugs and other crimes....and the behrman clan ...look at all the junk they stirred up.....they had a great thing going why get greedy and try to have it all.....they should be happy with what they got......if we could just straighten up our own problems maybe those names mentioned would be household names like other prominent sports figures.....just what i think....who really knows......juston coleman

hi, i have not read yet the whole thread, but i would like to butt in to the discussion, since im a FILIPINO pool player...and i havent seen a filipino pool player came in here and post his opinion...

i dont claim that filipino pool players are the best pool players in the world, its just that a filipino is the best in the world right now, even the pro players admire him, he is not other than the magician, efren *bata* reyes. i dont even tell anyone that filipinos are the best in the world of pool...its a big mistake if someone says that.

however, with the philippine open undertaking right now, and with 3 filipino pool players entering the semi-finals, 1 from finland, mika immonen (my idol), considering there were a lot of international big names that entered, whom most of em were unfortunately defeated by a filipino pool player, i can say, that there are a lot more filipino pool players who are at par with the well known international pro-players...even i can say i am at par with some of those international pro-players.

and im saying that there are i think 50 or more pool players all over the country better than me. so what if they had the money to travel the world to establish their names and make it to the rankings bethesilentstone says? im just offended that someone says the filipino pool players are proud, and always bragging they are the best in the world...well, i have not seen anyone said such a thing.

alright, bragging mode on, when i defeated a canadian tourist who my pool friends gave me as an opponent here in our local pool hall, i have put on a clinic, and as proud as he was coming to the room, there's this deep feeling wanting to say yeah, im so good, wahoo!!! but, being the sportsman that i am, i just put on a friendly smile and shook hands with the guy, talked about the match and how good it went.

you will find most of us being the most down to earth pool players, dunno why, but personally, i dont want too much attention, and i play pool not to be famous, but because i like the game, i love the game, i live the game. ;)

It is so funny how every time a person posts something about a great player on almost any board, A Phillipino butts in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The following post is just an illusion It is not claiming to be better than the Phillipinos so please move along.

Most People respond in panic and anger to the truth, because it hurts. So I am expecting retaliation, but I will alway rely on facts to draw my conclusions.

kinda long winded for saying ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

and i'm sure the filipinos are grateful that you have made them honorary americans.

I don't think that you are a follower of other sporting events as you are not aware that a Filipino is a Guiness record holder for BOWLING. Rafael Nepomuceno is a 4 time World Cup Bowling Champion and is the only bowler who has won this title in THREE CONSECUTIVE DECADES! Manny Pacquiao just took Barrera's boxing crown away recently at the Alamo Dome in what was regarded as the most amazing boxing display of all time. We also have Jethro "the Jet" Dionisio who is making waves in the steel challenge (shooting) and Jen Rosales and Delasin who, even as rookies, have won LPGA tour events. Eugene Torre, our chess Grand Master, is still a force to reckon with.

I'm sure that you are referring to sports that most Asians don't have the physical size for. Americans have the physical size for non-size/weight regulated sports and do excel in those. That too is why these sports are real popular there, specially to the networks $$$$$!

From what I have read pool is far more prevalent in the Phillipines per capita than here in the US. In one post I read a Filipino explained many different reasons why this is so. Everything from the social system thru the economy and many other reasons as well. Gamblling factors heavily into the equation. Many top players travel to the Far East because of the $$ available over there. It is now Mika's 2nd home. I've felt for a long time that you could put a paper bag over one of their(Phillipines) heads and put 5" lifts in their shoes and you would still recognize "the stroke" People in other parts of the world seem to, at times, have a greater passion for this wonderful game. Maybe gambling plays a bigger part in their developement than we think. I watched a couple of hrs of Tang Hoa and Scott Frost playing 1 hole. Pleasant couple of hours!

Well i'm not as old as most of the guys here tha posted but the guy that started this thread must be out of his mind....i don't have time to be quoting people he just sadid something about hollywood and this"We all know the main place the future of pool depends on is the U.S.A." All i can say is pool ain't nothing like a movie.....the US may dominate in most sport but this doesn;'t happen to be one of them......I'm a filipino but a Canadian citizen..i've been living in Canada longer than i have in the Philippines....that means if i had the chance which i doubt it if i was a pro i'd rather be representing Canada than Philiippines so my opinions isn't biased. I'm just saying have do you travel much? How can you say such a thing without even backing it up....so you know how much pool is revered in the Phils......I've visted it about 3 years ago and when i wen't there there are practically poolhalls each mile if not every corner of the street.
You say about Philippines braggin about they're players..wut do you expect from a third world country..i'm not trying to put them down but it's the truth...they ain't wealthy like the states where they can provide all the training and sponsor to their atheletes....we/they are proud of wut we/they have. Considering the resources that they have.

"Most of the Philipino players live and operate in the U.S.A, So that makes them in part, Americans. So why do the Phillipinos get all in tears about their players? " What exactly are Americans/Canadians.....check your history....the only true Americans/Canadians are the natives/indians...the rest would be imigrants from eithere europe or some other continents.

"Where are the true Phillipinos in rank?
Really have they ever truly dominated the sport? Let us look at the hard facts about these players. The U.S.A has always dominated this sports with multiple world beaters. "

Always dominated this sport?...look in the early 90's who won the USA vs Phillipine match? nuff said there.

"Most People respond in panic and anger to the truth, because it hurts. So I am expecting retaliation, but I will alway rely on facts to draw my conclusions."
You don't know what the facts are if it smacked you right on the face. I'm not trying to defend anyone here nor am I trying to bash...just stating my opinion which was unbiased.....Ask yourself this....there are few filipinos that brag the players/how they claim they dominate this game....it's prolly the ones without manners and the ones always trying to pick fights.....there are those few, but, why would most people agree that filipinos are good at this game, and one of the best players in this game. Commentators says it players says it.

So what if we/they're pool crazy.......it's a big sport in that country much like how football is a big sport in the USA which other countries could careless of.

"People all over the world idolize Americans, and American Television Media. We are Hollywood ,and the Superbowl. The Alpha and the Omega,365days a year On every T.V.Everywhere.Who cares about Norweigen womens pool or how many people are signed up in advance there. " It's this kind of attitude that alot of countries hates the US. You think everyone cares about the superbowl....heck prolly 50/50 of candians could care about it much less the world.
"The U.S. Is the only place in the world that it matters for pools future"You might not have said it but it's clear in some of your statements, you are somewhat saying that the future is in the US. bullshit.
I don't even know why you bring hollywood into this and revenues wuts this got to do with pool? Soccer happens to be the most popular sport in the world why not bring that up? why cause you guys can't dominate in that?
For some reason you sound like it's either you're new to the sport or just just being an ass on purpose. Just admiit it..everyone knows Pool is bigger in Asian than in the states. You say all these thing swithout backing it up. And yes i will admit Canada ain't that strong in pool either but heck i bet we could run t in snooker against you guys...it all balances' out here. I'm man enough to admit that i am wrong in something......just say so and i will admit it.

*Filipino/Pilipino
and lastly in your other thread....who got inducted first in the hall of fame...."King"Earl and Reyes. sometimes stats just ain't good enough. yeah so i decided to quote most it's too bad it's late "7:00am " to be exactlt and i haven;t slept yet lol....i might have more things to say. oh well.

Dont get mad guy, I was just making a point about how people like you break in and make gods out of all your players not just one or two Like All Phillipinos are the rulers.

Congrads to U.S.Citizen, and UPA pro player Mika Immonen who, took care of furthuring this thread by checkmating Bata.

With all due respect.... I have seen Reyes play,Busty,Alex,Ronnie, santos, jose, all up close, all live. The Phillipinos do play amazing game! I see alot of freeflowing slopiness in alot of these players strokes that causes them to miss sometimes. Dool tries to immitate this wild stroke with bad results. Mika however , has a semi-freeflowing Bustystyle stroke with a controled hit .

Dool, Alex and Jose do not have the "roller-coaster" stroke.
Jose has one textbook stroke. Alex has a controlled stroke as well.
Efren has actually lost a lot of that bicycle stroke. Still has the long bridge though.

Bandido,

I watched that Pacquiao/Barrera fight. Manny gave Barrera a boxing lesson! I watched Manny several times now and have been very impressed with him! He doesn't look like he would have the power that he has. He has knocked fighters out with either hand.

There are three Filipinos in the Boxing Hall of Fame.
Pancho Villa, Flash Elorde and Ceferino Garcia.
Pancho Villa is a legend (born Francisco Guilledo).
Manny is now knocking-in on the Hall of Fame.

mika has nothing like a busta stroke. it is fluid and controlled and has none of busta's trademark flair. he played snooker early on., so his stroke is rather controlled. his bridge ain't the same, his grip ain't the same, his practice stroke ain't the same, his stroke ain't the same. and busta flairs his forearm out a bit.

in every sense of the word, mika's stroke is classic, but smoother than most other players. busta's is by no means classic.

other than that, they're both right-handed.

American players are the best! Rah rah rah! Go America! If you don't like it, our president will blow your third-world country up!

(I hope it's obvious I'm being sarcastic)

bethesilentstone, if you have watched the match, like i did, mika (my idol) didnt really checkmated bata...they were all doing uncharacteristic mistakes because the nerves were getting into em, pressure, wear and tear because they played two nerver breaking matches that day.
they were playing bad positionings which lead to a number of safety battles. but that was on the later part of the match, overall, it was a very exciting battle for the championship. and i know what it exciting means for 9-ball.

mika just got the better out of the situation. even he admits it. ;)

i cant compare mika to busty, nor to anybody, mika has a straightforward stroke, almost textbook execution.

I ain't mad....just giving my 2cents. You're gonna post something like this and what, not expect any replies or people disagreeing with you. And what do you mean people like me? Where in my statements did i say filipino's are god of pool? I said the future in pool is in Asian...get it right don't get it twisted. Don't tell me Americans doesn't do the same thing in any sports bragging about how good they are or for any countries for that matter. Amercians are good at basketball with their dream team Canada with hockey, and the Euroes with football/snooker.
ANd if Alex you meant Pagulayan i wouldn't even say he has a sloppy stroke...he has a text book style stroke. Chin on the cue aiming low smooth stroke. No ones perfect that is why they miss.
