U.S.Open date changes...good or bad????

I was just wondering and i realize that this may have already been asked but do you think that the date change and the Sunday to Saturday schedule will hurt the open?. I know a few people that would generally attend if it was held over the weekend like the past years. They have to lose some spectators because of this. How will the vendors fare under this new schedule. I know a lot of them do a lot of business over the weekend.....was just curious what everybody thinks about it. I hope he changes it back. Wasn't there usually a big dollar tournament the weekend before somewhere in Maryland or some place like that??? I wonder what happened to it????..did the date change kill it????????.............mike

Vender's Woes

I would expect high end cue sales to be off. The ICCS show is happening in TX at the same time as the US Open. I love it that guys like Joe Salazar and Dick Abbott come out to the US Open and share hundreds of thousands worth of exotic cues with the public. I've bought cues from both over the years and had good experiences all around. But profit at an event like that might depend on one or two high end cue sales... and I fear that those sales will be made in Texas, not Virginia this year.

I think attendence may be off a little bit. My experience was that as the open moved on, more people started showing up. The weekend was packed with fans who may work during the week, but maybe got off on Friday to make it for the weekend. I don't know if it's worth it for them if it all ends on Saturday. How many would make the trip to see one day of action?
OTOH, those who go for a week will now have Sunday to return home, so it might help those fans. All in all, it's probably a wash as far as attendence goes.

I've been attending the US Open for well over 10 years and because of work my friend and I had to leave Sunday morning to return home to be ready for work on Monday morning. We always bought VIP tickets for the week and someone else got to use our seats for the final matches since we were on our way home on Sunday. With the new dates for the US Open I can finally relax and see the final matches on Saturday and get up Sunday morning and travel home.

I understand what you mean about the weekend only spectators, but in my case and many others I took the week of the open off like a vacation and that meant the following Monday was a work day and Sunday had to be a travel day back home for us (about 439 miles).

There must have been enough people in my situation, players included, or they wouldn't have changed the dates to make Sunday a travel day.....

Mike, I do like the change to October, but I'm not crazy about the move to the Sunday to Saturday schedule. Although it doesn't affect me personally, I know several others affected by the change.
Concerning the tournament you are asking about, the Tiger-Planet Pool Tour used to run a U.S. Open warm-up tournament in Maryland. Obviously, with the change, they were not able to run that tournament. However, they are having a tournament in Rockville Maryland on the final weekend of the Open. They are hoping some of the pro players, not in the final rounds, will attend.

I feel Barry changed it so when he says Saturday night "Everyone back to Q-Master's for the after party!", the # of folks that will come over will go up. Go to Q-Master, eat, drink, play pool, watch some $ matches AND SPEND SOME $$$$$$$$!
