The UK based company Riley's Pool & Snooker, with more than 165 clubs all over the United Kingdom closed more than 15 poolhalls yesterday, and the rumours say 15 more to go very soon.

The staff and customers knew nothing, suddenly the clubs were closed.

Hopefully a new company will open them again, but today no one knows anything...

Yorkshire Evening Posts writes:

WAKEFIELD'S Rileys snooker club has closed with the loss of five jobs.

The closure of the Northgate club follows the collapse into administration earlier this week of its parent company Rileys Ltd and various subsidiaries.

Simon Allport and Tom Jack of business services firm Ernst & Young were appointed joint adminis
ADVERTISEMENTtrators on Tuesday.

Rileys Ltd operated pool and snooker clubs throughout the UK.

Headquartered in Milton Keynes, it employed approximately 1,400 employees across 159 sites.

Following their appointment, the joint administrators sold the assets of the business to Valiant Sports Ltd, for an undisclosed sum.

The new owner is understood to include some of the firm's existing directors.

The clubs will continue to trade as Rileys in 129 sites, including Leeds, Castleford and Pontefract, which will remain open for trading as usual.

However 30 sites, which were not part of the sale, have closed - including Wakefield and Scarborough, where six jobs were lost.

Mr Allport said: "The companies have been experiencing tough trading difficulties due to a downturn in trade and a heavy debt burden and were unable to trade outside of administration.

"Fortunately we have been able to secure a deal, which means 129 sites will continue to trade and the brand and 1,200 jobs will be preserved."

painful news

I'm really sorry to hear this. (I spent almost two weeks at the Riley's in Victoria once, and it was a really good atmosphere.) I doubt that's one of the ones closing, but still. It's sad for pool, sad for Riley's, sad for the people who depend on pool for so much...

Sad to see that Oxford Colours (city centre) is closed. Travel to the UK several times a year and always drop in for a few pints and some snooker - it was conevniently located right around the corner from the Old Bank Hotel. Can't say I'm surprised, though; there was almost no one else ever playing there.

I saw an article about British pubs suffering large declines in business - caused by a combination of the economic problems and a large increase in taxes on booze. Think of the hardship on those drunken darts players.

I was just in Riley's in Coventry on Saturday. Seemed busy enough, but maybe they shut it down after I walked out!

My colleague here (I"m still in Coventry) tells me that pubs are closing down at an alarming rate (30 per week!) in the UK. And that it's due to the smoking laws. Is that really what's happening?

Whew. Glad it's just the recession. For a moment there I thought maybe Jimmy White had died or something.
