Ultra Skin Tips

I thought I read where the pad gave a softer hit. Am I wrong on this?

I've heard that but it hasn't been my experience. I always put a pad on ivory ferrules for protection. I also install a pad when the ferrule has been cut down below 12mm because of how thin the ferrule is. Occasionally, a player will ask for a red or blue pad just for looks.

I'd never recommend an UltraSkin to a player who tends to be on a soft side. Kamui SS is a super soft tip, and my experience tells me that even UltraSkin S is harder than Kamui S and Moori S.

That being said, I learned that the more skilled a player is, the more he tends to play with a harder tip. Medium and Hard tips provide more feedback. I even happen to know a local pro who switched from Soft to Med last year and says he should have done that wel before.
I have an UltraSkin M on both of my shafts and have been very satisfied so far. No mushrooming, no glazing. I have one piece of chalk (out of four) I used to like which doesn't work good (=results in miscues) but I think it's not the tip to blame but the chalk. And even in this case I don't blame the whole brand but only this very cube which must have dried out.

So before one makes a decision not to deal with UltraSkin tips I suggest to make at least another try. It's the Indian, not the arrow.
