uni-loc tapered SS joint

I bought a few of these to try out:

I decided to try the fit on a junk dowel I had. I cut the tenon to .585 and threaded it 5/8-18, cut the counterbores also. And it doesn't thread on. The threads don't even touch on the inside of the collar. I'm using a tenon threader from Hightower. Has anyone else ran into this? I've never had this problem with any other collars that I've bought.

Some SS joints and 5/8 and some are 3/4. I never used this specific joint that I can recall but do have some 3/4 threaded joints someone sent to me by mistake. I don't even know the thread count.

For those joints, you have to use a .610 minimum tenin. I brought this up quite a while back to the maker of them, I told them a lot of guys are using the tenin threader that Chris, Lee and Unique offer and that Joints from Ct. Cue parts will thread with a .585 tenin, Nothing was changed,

As you've found out, you can not get away with the undersize tenons favored by compression threaders. In fact, even a .625 diameter tenon is too small. This is a modified thread. And it's REALLY modified. The problem is that Uni-Loc doesn't elaborate on the thread specs. I found what works by trial and error. Attached is a pic of my trial tenon that works perfectly. Keep in mind that these threads are meant to be live tooled. If you're still interested, email me through my website & I'll send you the specs.

Edit: Mr Webb says a smaller tenon will work. Maybe they did change things because I used a .640 OD for mine and, as you can see, there is no sharp point on my threads. Keep in mind that I tried these maybe 10 yrs ago and decided against using them. Maybe I have the first generation.

Post deleted. After messing around this morning I got the threads to work.

Hello Mike,

Where you able to make a compression die work for those joints or do you have to use live threading? I have tried all kinds of diff size tennons but the Atlas aluminum die tears the hell out of the threads.

I use a 5/8X18 split die and open it all the way, I have it in a 1 1/2 holder with a shank on it, Works very well. I still prefer to taper my own joints and bore the I.D. pilot after it's on the cue.

I deleted the original post after working on the threads this morning. I had a die like you mentioned and did the same and it made threads that make the collar go on pretty tight. It feels like it should work out OK. I bought this die years ago to clean up the old Meuci weight bolts, forgot I had it until I started going through my odd and end box.
