Why would they use that for joint material and not ferrule material, unless the original shaft disappeared i noticed the rings aren't indexed
I used it for joint, buttcap, and ferrule. Ferrule may have been replaced. The original micarta hasn't been made since the late 80's.

Yes, but it was known for it's functional ability in the ferrule. If we are talking about the Westinghouse material that contained a hazardous material, yet it had characteristics like no other, We still have some ivorine 3, 4 and the next secret material PlayThru !

Shaft matches rings on butt. Butt is 29 inches, shaft 28 inches. Joint is micarta. Could it be possible shaft ferrule was replaced and lost an inch? Not sure but shaft appears original.

I'd bet high that the ferrule has been replaced. Look at how clean it is compared to the rest of the cue. No knock meant by that, by the way. I dig the cue.

We all pretty much gathered that because the joint is micarta. Micarta would have been on the ferrule, and since the op already stated the shaft was shorter and he felt that the person that did the work on the shaft didn't know or have the ability to install a tenon to keep the full length of the shaft

The rings on this shaft collar do not line up. Maybe the shaft came from another cue someone pasted the joint ring on there, not thinking to index the rings

Maybe send Pics to Jeff at Prather cues in Ok.
The points remind me of some pre-made butts I saw in Tusa back in the day at Mike Betts shop in the Palace,
Mike learned from Verl Horn. Mike and Verl both used Prather cue parts for their cues.

It could be something from someone that worked with
Verl. i have worked on a few Verl's cues and not sure i told people what i found. You could be on to something here.

The rings on the butt all line up and are indexed perfectly The shaft ring is not indexed with the joint collar

Most of the verl horn shafts i have seen were all ivory

Lining the joint collars is easy. Facing either shaft or butt a very small amount will line them up.
.

The use of a piloted micarta joint, the style of the cue itself, the point work, makes me think that this possibly would be the very early work 70s into 80s of a cue maker who possibly became more well known as they progressed. The long 5/16 18 pin may have been an early experiment by the maker that was later shelved on future cues.
I know that you have touched hundreds of cues- so if the cue butt weight, overall cue balance, the sound of the shaft tapped against a cue ball, all denote the feeling of some quality in the build, then I would bet on early work of a cue guy who became more successful and started signing cues at some point.
