Up Coming Hip Surgery

Hi All,

Just got back into shooting pool in the last couple of months. A couple of neighbors have tables and I have been playing about twice a week for 2 hours each time.

Starting to get some good shooting from time to time - had a decent 13 ball run at straight pool this afternoon but lost 50 to 38 to a neighbor who is a very good player.

Could not eke out any 8 or 9 ball wins against him today though.

Anyway, I am scheduled for right hip replacement surgery on Thur. Am hoping to be back at the table in about 3 weeks.

Anyone else have experience with this and the time frame to begin shooting again?

Am hoping to get back on the golf course in 5 to 6 weeks. 73 years old.

Thanks,

Bruce

I do know people that had hip surgery. Mostly golfers..were back in action in a few weeks. Most said they were sorry they did not do it earlier. Pain is gone...they feel pretty good. Good luck you should be fine

My Sister had a single hip replacement. She was on her feet in no time, and afterwards, no pain, no limp.
She asked the Orthopedist if she could play pool, after the surgery. He said it wouldn't be a problem. She told him that was good news because she never could play pool before. She did mention her Brother did, though.
Best of luck.

A few years back my Sister had both hips replaced about 2 months apart. She had the small incision method which has a faster recovery I guess. Anyway after rehab (got to follow through with the rehab) she is more active than ever. She's retired but volunteers as a docent giving hikes around the San Francisco woodlands areas. She was in her early 70's when she had the surgeries. You should be able to do more than you have been able to for a while. Good luck.

Bruce......I just had my 4th rotator cuff surgery on February 3rd to the same right shoulder....the prior one was last June and the others were in 2013 and 2011. Needless to say, my pool playing was affected and interrupted completely for extended periods over the past 5 years.

I am just about to resume playing pool, or so I hope assuming my surgeon tells me is okay when I see him next week. This layoff has been 15 weeks and it really sucks to have an interruption of great length. Of course, I know it could always be a lot worse but naturally the flip side is look at how better it could be too......we play the cards we're dealt and as long as we don't go bust and remain in the game, well, I suppose it goes without saying that any pool is better than no pool.

Best of Luck recovering quickly.

Yes, I am having the "anterior" approach which will use a small incision in my groin area and does not involve cutting any muscle so recovery time is less that the standard "posterior" approach going in from the back or side.

Thanks for the good wishes.

I can relate to this. The brochures I received stated that I would be able to dance and bowl about 6 to 8 weeks after the surgery. Not true, still can't do either.

I did play at an 8 Ball tournament 4 weeks after the second replacement. Used crutches to move around, but not while playing. Slept in the van in the Walmart parking lot (not by the river). I was 38 at the time.

A guy at the local center was playing about 3 weeks after a total hip replacement last fall.

I believe two or three weeks would be reasonable now with the less invasive surgery techniques used.

I see a guy playing pool every week...he's had both hips done.....he is satisfied.

I hope I never need it.....I LIKE being hip.....

Into surgery at 11 am on Thu. Walking by 5 pm. One night in hospital and then home late Fri afternoon.

Pain was worst on Friday night and Sat morning, but I am up and moving around a lot with a walker and doing my exercises.

Feeling pretty good today. Hopefully I will continue with a speedy recovery.

Bruce......sounds like you're doing as well as anyone undergoing the same surgery cold hope for....
Just adhere to your home physical therapy program you do when you are not at the therapist's office.
I betcha you'll be doing fine way before 4th of July and how soon depends on your adherence to only
doing what they prescribe and not overdoing it........this approach is working really well with my right
shoulder and I know I'll be playing golf again before next summer. The last time I played was July 3, 2009.
