Upcoming BCAPL Season

Our new BCAPL season will be starting in a couple of weeks. We had a general players' meeting to discuss the new season and bylaws.

Unfortunately our members voted and decided to vote out the rule for racking your own break. Not sure exactly why.

I argued the point that since this is a BCAPL sanctioned league then ALL rules are applicable and you can't pick and choose which rules you want to use or not use. Of course I was overuled by the majority. I believe the better/competitive players were in agreement but the majority were the lesser players who are in the league to have fun.

It might be minor but to me a rule is a rule and if it applies then it should be used. Unfortunately this is the only league in the local area. I just wish there was some recourse......

What are your thoughts?

I agree... however this is a BCAPL league. We pay our membership dues to the BCAPL and as such the BCAPL rules are applicable.

ALL those rules should apply and not just the ones we want to use!!!!

from what i recall BCA rules are just about the same as world standarized rules...someone correct me if im wrong, but yes ALL BCA rules should be followed in the BCAPL.

I was so happy to hear that the BCAPL instituted the rack-your-own rule in Vegas, only to find out that, like yours, my local league overrides the rack-your-own rule. That is nice that you at least had a vote. :) Ours was decided by our LO. :( He figured that people weren't familiar with rack-your-own, so he didn't want to have to explain it. I guess I have to get my pitch ready and try to convince him to switch it for next season. It's the way to go for all pool games, in my opinion.

The "rack your own" provision appears to be strictly a BCAPL rule. I don't see any rule about which player racks anywhere in the World Standardized Rules by the World Pool-Billiard Association published on the BCA website. The rule in the BCAPL handbook on the BCAPL website however calls for the breaker to rack at all "BCAPL events". Is a league match a BCAPL event? Probably subject to interpretation.

I don't understand why a local league would want to go against the "breaker racks" option. It eliminates a potential conflict and it prepares the players for league events.

I found it interesting that the World Standardized Rules do give several options for the break including winner breaks, loser breaks, alternate breaks, and trailing player breaks, so nothing is set in stone.

I haven't played any leagues that do that & unfortunatly we don't have the BCAPL up here but I like that rule. Every once in a while you will get players requesting reracks to try & get in their oppenents head. They are a pain in the a**. I will have to mention this one to our tourneys here.

Actually the definitions in the 2008-2009 Official Rules for Event is as follows:

Event
Any match, game, series of matches or games, league schedule or tournament which is conducted under the authority of any national, regional, state or local administrative body that is BCAPL owned, sanctioned or sponsored.

That tells me during league play it is a BCAPL event.

Our League Was Similar

Our league also plays by the BCAPL rules with a few exceptions. Every session at our payout they ask me if there are any new rules to discuss. I think to myself you don't play by all of them and half the players don't know the ones you do follow....but I digress.

Our league plays by all the BCAPL rules except..the practice rule. Since we play BCAPL and there is occasionally APA going on in the same venue, they have taken that rule off the board. We also have been told that they may take the UC fouls out since most of the players can't get it through their head to stop doing those things and leads to arguments and threats to quit the league if a team trys to enforce the rule on someone.

I adapt to change easily, but then there are those folks that take a little longer. I still get a kick out of the players that come up and ask me "Am I racking or breaking". I usually laugh and tell them "I know you're racking.....it's up to you if you break or not". Then they think for a second and laugh too......probably because they do that once a week. :)

When we first changed the racking rule to "Rack Your Own" there was some initial resistance. A year has passed by and 95% of the BCA Pool League players have stated that they now love the rule. League operators that do not use the rule in the local leagues are doing a great disservice to their players. At regional and national events there is no option. Players that are not used to our rules are at a definate disadvantage.

We strongly suggest to all league operators that they use "The Official Rules of the BCA Pool League" in their local leagues. However, some have not adopted the rules completely. It is impossible for us moniter 500 leagues to see that they are following the rules to a "T". In some cases, slight deviations to the book are warranted based on the structure of the league.
