Update from World Championships

Hi all -

No good news for me yet. I lost my first match to Charlotte Sorenson from Denmark in the first round. Unfortunately, the rolls were a huge factor in the match....with her missing many balls but leaving me hooked 90% of the time. It was very frustrating for me...especially when she accidentally hooked me 4 different times with only 2 balls left on the table. She even apologized for all the times she got lucky, but sorrys don't win matches. :(

I hope I don't sound like I am crying...I know that luck is sometimes a huge part of 9-ball. Hopefully, I will be able to recover and get a few lucky rolls myself in my next match. I am playing well, and I feel pretty good, despite a little jet lag.

I will write again later and let you all know how I do in my next match.

BTW, Austria is beautiful and the people are really nice...but it is freaking cold out here.

Regards - Melissa

spoken like a true Californian :D

Melissa you are a heck of a player and I predict the rolls will go the other way in your next match.

Thanks for the update.

Good luck to you Melissa, I'm rooting for you all the way. It was nice meeting you in FL. Take care and talk to you later. BTW, use some of your sunshine to warm that place up! Heck, pass some over here, as I too am cold! :D

update from the worlds

Melissa:

A paraphase from Alex Pagulayan - '9-Ball is the type of game where one day you're not going to win and it will be through no fault of your own'.

Hang in there...don't give up yet...we haven't...its not over yet....

2nd round update

Hi again -

Okay....better news this time! I won my second match 9-7 against Tammi Cantonni from Australia. I played strong for parts of the match....but once again, some lucky rolls on her part kept her close in the match. The difference is...this time I got 2 very good rolls of my own which won me games early on. I played a 2-9 combo (with a safety thrown in for good measure) because I did not have a pocket for the 2-ball, and I missed the combo, got the safe...but the 9-ball caromed off another ball and went in another pocket. I don't feel real bad about that one because I played the 2-way shot and did get the safety I was going for.

The second good roll was an 8-ball that she missed...and then I missed it but it hit the point of the corner and shot down the short rail into the other corner pocket. I guess I should feel bad...but she had done the exact same thing the rack before...so it was karma....LOL.

As for my fellow Americans....Jeanette Lee and Tiffany are 2 matches in on the winners side....and Monica Webb, Melissa Little and I all lost our forst rounds but won our second rounds. (I guess we all decided to avenge our first-round losses by punishing our next opponents). Unfortunately, we all won by slim margins...it seems to be taking a little while to get used to the equipment. Anyhow...off to bed....

Love you all -

Melissa

According to the results at epbf.com, Melissa was outed by Belgian Wendy Jans 9-1. Also local favourite Jasmin Ouschan is also through to L16 by beating Julie Kelly 9-4.

Sorry to see that you went out, Melissa. But, you have had an awesome year and I just wanted to say good luck in future events. I'm looking forward to seeing you play on TV (I've heard you are very animated, and I love watching players that show emotion - I'd love to see a match on TV with you vs. Vivian Villarreal).

Sorry to hear the bad news Melissa, but don't feel bad this tournament is loaded with great players, look how fast Allison and some other great players went out. Jasmin and Wendy are both great players, as is Meng Meng Zhou these three girls play well beyond their years.

Hi all -

The world-weary traveller is finally home! As you all know - I did not do very well at the World Championships....2 wins, 2 losses. I can honestly say that I did not realize how difficult the conditions would be....playing with jet lag...not being able to get a full night's sleep...not eating well because the food tended to give me indigestion. I am NOT making excuses...because all the non-European players had to deal with the same conditions...but I am admitting to being ill-prepared to handle all of it. As I have said before....every time I come across something that affects my play in a negative way...I learn from it and I don't let it bother me ever again. So...at next year's World Championships...I look forward to taking another shot at it! And knowing what to expect will help me be very prepared....

Thank you all for the support and well-wishes!!! It was wonderful to be able to log on and see all the notes from home...it made me a little less homesick!!!

BTW - A hearty congratulations to my friend, Ga-Young Kim....the 2004 World Champion! She played great and it was an emotional moment when she got on that podium and they played the Korean national anthem. I am not the only WPBA who was moved to tears watching her. She is a terrific player and because of her youth, we are lucky enough to have her around for a very long time!

All the best - Melissa

Hello Melissa,

You played Wendy Jans from Belgium in your last match during the World Championships in Rankweil Austria.
Unfortunaly you lost 9-1, i am managing Wendy a little bit, and she is going to try and qualify for the main tour of the WPBA next year.
What do you think of her, is she ready to take the step?
By the way, visit her website if you like and leave a message on her guestbook it is a very nice website: www.wendy-jans.com

Maurice -

She played very well in our match...and if she maintains that level of play on the WPBA tour....she should be able to earn her Touring Pro status without a problem. I cannot tell you how well she will be able to deal with traveling back and forth between Europe and the US...the time difference can wreak havoc on the body and mind. Also, the women of the WPBA are very confident...especially in our own arena....so new players often find it very intimidating to come play on the WPBA tour.

All of that being said, Wendy is a player with a lot of talent and a strong heart. The WPBA is always happy to have new faces and new talent coming into the tour...and the Europeans definitely have strong history of sending over new and great players.

Hope that answers your questions....

I think the proper word is "borrowed". :D

And it is a good thing that you didn't forget my name, as I am an important person. (All people are important.) There will be a Destiny's Child quiz later; you know "say my name, say my name." I'll give you time to forget first. :p
