EFREN "Bata" Reyes' worst fear came true. He was beaten by Antonio "Gaga" Gabica last night.

Before the start of the Hope P1-Million All-Filipino Billiards Open, Reyes said he's wary of local players more than foreigners because of their intense desire to topple him at home.

It turned out he was right as Gabica, the reigning Philippine 9-Ball champion, blanked Reyes for five straight racks en route to a stunning 9-4 victory at the IBC 13 studios in Quezon City.

Reyes' first defeat in two games sent shock waves to the other acknowledged cue masters, including bosom buddy Francisco "Django" Bustamante, the world's No.1 last year.

Facing promising Jeffrey "Young Bata" de Luna, Bustamante used his vast international experience to hack out a 9-4 victory in the afternoon games at the AMF Puyat Billiard Hall in Ever Gotesco Mall Commonwealth branch in Quezon City.

"Ganyan talaga ang laro, may talo (That's how the game goes, sometimes you lose)," said the 50-year-old

Reyes, the game's top money earner last year.

While admitting that he got lucky on the break, Gabica said he also felt confident that he could beat his godfather (Reyes) because he was hitting his shots very well.

The defeat relegated Reyes to the loser's side where he's slated to meet Joven Alba today.

Gabica, who dumped another seeded player in Warren Kiamco (9-7) in the opening round Monday, will be facing the winner of the Lee Vann Corteza- Rodolfo Luat tussle being held at presstime.

After winning the lag, the Biel, Germany-based Bustamante scored three consecutive racks to set the tone of the lopsided match.

De Luna, the youngest qualifier at 20, rallied to within 3-2 only to watch Bustamante take the next two racks for a 5-2 edge.

Undaunted, De Luna, who got the Young Bata tag because of his penchant for trick shots like his idol Reyes, again closed in at 6-4.

A scratch after a shot at the No. 2 ball in the 11th rack, however, doomed De Luna's upset bid as Bustamante cleaned up the table and proceeded to seal the win.

"May future y'ung bata (De Luna), nakikita ko ng aking kabataan sa kanya (The kid has a bright future, I was like him in my younger years)," said Bustamante. "Malakas siyang sumargo, y'ung nga lang walang pumapasok. (He has a strong break, unfortunately the ball doesn't fall in).

Bustamante said De Luna might have been too eager because he still lacks practice and international exposure.

In pool-crazy Philippines and Asia, I hope they start putting on TV more games other than 9-ball. They anyway put hours and hours of airtime for pool so even slower games could get exposure.

EFREN "Bata" Reyes and Jeffrey de Luna, pool magicians belonging to different eras, began their march out of the loser's bracket with victories over separate foes yesterday in the Hope All-Filipino Billiards Open at the AMF Puyat Billiards Hall in Ever Gotesco-Commonwealth.

Reyes, the legendary trickster known worldwide as the Magician, pummeled an overmatched Edgar Acaba, 9-2, to bounce back from a stunning defeat to Antonio Gabica the other night.

"I needed to win because I was coming off a loss," said the soft-spoken Reyes.

The 20-year-old De Luna, the youngest qualifier in the P1-million event, plastered the 50-year-old Roberto Dy, 9-5.

Reyes was scheduled to play Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat, a 9-3 winner over Warren Kiamco also yesterday, at presstime. De Luna was also set to face Gandy Valle, who nipped Joven Alba, 9-8.

Late Tuesday, Alex Pagulayan, the reigning world pool champ, beat Valle, 9-6, to set a mouth-watering duel against Django Bustamante today.

De Luna, known in the moniker-crazy billiards circuit as "Jeff Bata" because of his penchant for magical shots made famous by Reyes, trailed Dy, 3-5, after eight games. But a crucial 3-ball miss in the 10th frame sealed Dy's doom.

Reyes lost the lag and the first frame but racked up seven straight wins on the way to victory in the event backed by Hope, Talk 'N Text, More, Mark and Champion and held under the aegis of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines under its president, Ernie Fajardo, in partnership with billiards patron Aristeo "Putch" Puyat and Jemah's Mark Roces.

Youth served as other ‘Bata’ ousts oldest bet

Jeffrey "Jeff Bata" de Luna is turning out to be a fast learner.

One day after getting a harsh schooling from Francisco "Django" Bustamante, De Luna showed the nerves of a true-blue pool hustler in ousting old warrior Roberto "Bert Pasay" Dy, 9-5, yesterday to stay alive in the Hope R1-Million All-Filipino Billiards Open.

Also staying in contention was pool icon Efren "Bata" Reyes who won seven straight racks on his way to a 9-2 win over Edgar Acaba.

Reyes, who lost to Antonio Gabica, 4-9, late Tuesday, now faces dangerous Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat who ousted Warren Kiamco, 9-3.

De Luna, the youngest qualifier in the event at 20, won six straight racks in the alternate break affair to complete a stirring rally from 3-5 down and get the respect of his veteran foe.

"Malayo ang mararating ng bata na ‘to," said Dy, one of the oldest campaigners in local pool circuit. "Hindi basta bumibigay at makikita mo na nakapokus sa laro."

De Luna, who got a round of applause from the spectators at the AMF Puyat Billiard Hall in Ever Gotesco Commonwealth, admitted Bustamante’s post-game comment on his game has inspired him to do better.

"Malaking bagay na napansin ni Django na kulang pa ko sa pasensya. Kaya ngayon talagang t’yinaga ko hanggang makuha ko ‘yung laro ko," said De Luna.

To extend his gratitude, De Luna wished: "Sana magkaharap pa kami ni Django sa tournament na ‘to."

De Luna will next face Gandy Valle, a 9-8 winner over snooker ace Joven Alba.

Valle was relegated to the losers’ bracket by reigning world pool champion Alex Pagulayan, 9-6, late Tuesday.

Another loss on players in the losers’ bracket would mean elimination.

Watch out, we might be seeing the name Jeffrey de Luna in the US circuit very soon.

There you have it!!!!
