Upgrade to "10ball hurting" thread ! (it got side tracked)

I will concede to your wisdom sir:thumbup: but I never compared Rounders to COM or The Hustler.

(It appears you may be the only one who didn't! Apologies to you sir. ;))

I did not mean to infer that Damon and a few others in Rounders, were not quality actors..But nothing could make that movie do much better than break even..(if that) :embarrassed2:..BTW, except for 'Good Will Hunting', most of Damon (and Norton's) major successes came well after that mediocre, poorly made 'B' movie about poker!..It certainly was NOT, in any way, directly responsible for poker's meteoric rise in popularity! :sorry:

And don't forget the poker scene from The Sting! Newman will always be the man!

Agreed JL...For those who bother to count..'The Sting' made ten times more money, than all the other poker movies added together! :p

Your ignorance is unbelievable. Rounders made almost 23million in the box office off of a 12million budget.

I'd love to 'almost break even' like that.

Sorry sir, but netting only 11Mil., in modern day Hollywood, is almost the same as losing money!..Would you care to venture a guess, as to how many hundreds of millions 'the Sting' made?
..Let me save you the trouble..In 1973, 'the Sting' cost only about 9mil to produce!..Compare that to a world-wide box office in excess of 450mil..Now thats what I would call 'makin' a buck'!

No telling how much these other 'perks' were worth?....

The Sting, won seven Academy Awards and received three other nominations.[8] At the 46th Academy Awards, Julia Phillips became the first female producer to be nominated for and to win Best Picture.

Academy Award for Best Picture (Julia Phillips)
Academy Award for Best Director—(George Roy Hill)
Academy Award for Best Writing, Original Screenplay—(David S. Ward)
Academy Award for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration—(Henry Bumstead and James W. Payne)
Academy Award for Best Costume Design—(Edith Head)
Academy Award for Film Editing—(William H. Reynolds)
Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation—(Marvin Hamlisch)
Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures—(George Roy Hill)
Supporting actor nominations.. George Shaw and Robert Redford (Shaw won the Oscar)

PS..So, in my case, ignorance is bliss! :p

You should run for office. You change the argument whenever it suits your need.

Making a PROFIT that almost equals the initial budget is by NO MEANS 'almost losing money'.

Just because you can cite movies that did much better does not mean Rounders is a B movie. It was first rate in every regard.

Let's take a look at another movie since you insist on changing the argument. The Shawshank Redemption brought in just over 28mil in domestic gross, but cost 25mil to make. Is it a 'B' movie? Widely panned by audiences (who aren't ignorant, egotistical old farts) to be one of the top movies ever made. But since it didn't make your 'Sting' money, it must be a 'B' or even 'C' movie.

BTW, 'Fast 5', a legitimate 'B' movie made over 600mil. Money doesn't define a quality or influential movie.

I don't know where I 'changed the subject'...but if you say so! ..Thousands of movies made a good profit, simply because they had a broader appeal! ..But that still does not make "Rounders" any more than a B movie! (at least not in any 'intelligent' observer's eyes! :sorry:)

Yo SJD

There's a match here of you against Joyner back in 98 (it's the 24th match from the top)

Do you remember?

It's a little late for me to watch it tonight, but I might rent it later this week and watch.

http://www.accu-stats.com/ppv1-pocket.html

Yes, I remember it well, I was 66yrs.old in '98 (hardly in my prime :o)..In fact, that was my one and only, accustat streamed event!..Also, that was about the only major tournament I entered, after retiring from UPS!..Those were pre-Frost and AlexP days, so Joyner and RA were the pre-tournament favorites!..GradyM. was also Player/TD!..Buddy Hall, beat Marco Marquez to win it!...Buddy's commentary on my match, is (to me) more interesting than the match itself! ;)

PS..I'll save you the rental fee, end tell you the outcome for $1.50..:p :p :p

I figured you weren't in your prime, but did you play well at all in this particular match, or did Joyner take control.

Despite the jabs between us, I'm actually hoping it's the former.

Welcome back Dick

Seems you are as argumentative as ever but you seem a little more laid back about it.. I like the change and hope it means you are feeling good and enjoying life sir...

Happy New Year to you and yours!!!!

Thanks for your support, Beib's...Lets just say, I somehow managed not to 'dog' too many easy shots! ;)

Are those numbers somehow accounting for the large portion of the box office that goes to the theaters? [I'm ignorant regarding terminology related to the finances of movie-making, but the simple words "box office" and "budget" made me wonder.]
