First off Congratualtions to Both Betty Sessions and Brian Parks for winning the event. Both wanted it badly after having a few years of high finishes.

I also say congrats to both Joseph Cole and Mary Rakin for finishing
second. "JoeJoe" wanted badly to become the youngest winner ever at 20 years old. Both he and Mary were playing in the event for just the first time.

Overall the weekend had many ups and downs for me but I still had fun. After arriving a couple days early to hang out I promptly was involved in a car accident. Not fun and a horrible way to start especially after finding out my insurance company would not cover it. Its going to be a fun couple months dealing with it.

Some of the good things about the event is that 95% of the players there are there for the love of the game and the competition. Its not about the money or even the trophy. Its about testing themselves and playing like minded people.
Rarely did you ever see a disagreement (1 saw one) and even then they are handled quickly without a big incident.
Virtually no sharking and players were actually nice to others playing arounf them. To me this is far different than playing with gamblers and in money events.
While the level of play is not Pro level there were many good shots and tons of tight matches. Often it came down to hill hill.

IMO the ladies division was a tough one with many capable of winning. In the end I thought the right two made the finals. They played a little better than the others this weekend.

The Mens division had a few layers of players. IMO there were about 15 contenders and then a big middle section of players right under the top guys and then a large diverse section after that.
The top teir included guys like Brian Parks, Kenneth Brisbon, former champs
David Rowell, Travis Gunn and Robert Hall, several past 2nd and third place finishers and some new fresh faces.
Joseph Cole of Pelham Al played hard and very well all weekend especially for it being his first attempt as well as only being 20 years old. He will be back and looks to have the talent to advance in the game.

The Mens finals was a very good finals going back forth finally ending up at Hill-Hill with JoeJoe breaking. Just as luck would have it he came up dry but left a nasty layout. Both players traded shots and then Brian Parks ended up poorly on the three ball. The cue stopped directly infront of the 8ball just pasted the middle of the table. The three was 20 inches straight ahead with all balls lining the middle of the table. Even with a bridge the shot was extremely tough. Brian took his time and finally pulled off a great shot thinning the three and sending the cue back down table. The three ended up on the end rail.
A couple shots later amazingly its almost the same roll on the other side of the 8. Trying to hit the 9 and leav shape on the 6 Brian just nips the 9 and the cue ball stops yet again in front of the 8. Brian again gets the bridge out and trys a safe but misses.
Joe Joe has a tough layout....

CueTable Help

After looking he decided to try and go across under the nine and come back across but he clipped the nine and missed the 6..

Leaving this layout

CueTable Help

Brian cuts the 6 towards the pocket and it doesnt seem to want to fall but finally does. However he came a little short on the 7

CueTable Help

Remember this is hill-hill. Brian chops the 7 down the rail and comes back across for the 8 int he side finishing witht he cueball center table for the nineball. It was over and was a nailbiter.
Joseph played well especially after going down 3-1 early. Brian missed an 8ball that gave him life. Following his big break he made the most of it and fought back. It seesawed until the last game.

Great post

Great post! Thank you for the good review. And too bad about the car accident. Sounds like no serious injuries... that's good. Hope that works out for you.

I completely agree here. I was in the 2007 USAM in Altlanta and noticed the exact same thing. Had a great time and met a lot of good people. Jason Richko won that particular year. Btw, the venue (Mr. Cues - Atlanta) was huge! So many tables! Nothing like it here on the West Coast / LA-OC.

I met old friends and made new ones. I played and met some AZers and overall had agood time.
I had big trouble keeping my head clear after my accident and plus having my parents come down to see me as well.
My final loss was a heartbreaker as I was down 6-1 and battled back to hill-hill. I get a shot with this layout..

CueTable Help

The ref was called to make sure on the hit. I made the three and ended up slightly off angle on the four

CueTable Help

I decided to play the 4 in the upper left and hit it with top sending the cueball up for the five on the left side. BUT I hit it a little weak ending up like this..

CueTable Help

I decide to cut the five figuring the if I hit it a little thick then the cueball would have a chance at the 7 or the 8.
I ended up like this

CueTable Help

I could see it and felt good. I played it thin with inside and not wanting it to roll off or checkup I hit it a little firm leaving myself good but longer than I wanted on the 8 BUT still not hard.

CueTable Help

The 9 might have been alittle lower or the eight a little higher but its close. I really didnt have to draw the 8 to stay on the nine but just keep it from going forward.
I promptly hung the 8 up in some big pockets. It was extremely deep in the pocket.
The group around gasped and I heard my father say loudly "Oh my god!"

I couldnt believe it and just about threw up.....

Hey you live and learn and I will likely try again. This was my second time and I finished 9-12 in 03.

All in all the event is fun and is full of good people. The venue wasnt perfect at all but had its pluses. I would choose the location personally but it wouldnt stop me from attending.
The event due to its Am status should be more grand like ALL other AM championships. The dress code should be stricter just to avoid any doubt. I personally would have worn cargo shorts and a non collared shirt had I known I wouldnt have been kicked out. Make it pants and a decent collared shirt and all would have been fine. They just had a few that didnt comply and nothing was done.
The registration/meet and greet/cocktail hour should be the night before.

Thats the time to recognize past champs and give it a BIG feel.

Overall I recommend playing if you are interested in good non-pro level pool with good pool loving people.

Congrats again to the winners and the other high finishers.

US Am's

Thanks for the write up! You had a good tourny also. I enjoyed hanging with you. Also thanks for the faith in the money game :)
Thanks Brian Parks

I cant predict a winner on TAR maybe 1/15 times but I told a bunch of people at the tournament that you were the favorite to snap it off Brian. Congrats again. I bailed out to go to a Cub Scouts event with my sons in Miami on Sunday but it sounds like I missed a real nail biter.

Oh and thanks for making me dog my brains out Frank!

Thanks Uwate. It was a close match. JoeJoe played great and will for a long time to come. He is also a very nice guy. For being so young he handled himself well!
