US Open Double elimination format?

A single elimination US Open would be interesting. Less time in terms of days of tournament duration, which should lessen the cost to run it, lower the entry fees as well because of the SE format.

But because the format will likely be the same next year, The player who goes through the tournament undefeated and gets into the finals, should get a monetary bonus for doing so since the finals is only one set. I would just like to see some fairness for the undefeated player.

I have worked on many DE tournaments that follow this same format. The players know what to expect going in. I've also worked on some that were true DE, like the U.S. Bar Table Championships.

I don't see either method as unfair. The guy who comes through the loser's bracket often has to win several more matches to get to the finals. In Mika's case he won fourteen in a row! If Ralf had lost the hot seat match to Donnie (it went hill-hill), he would have needed only one win to get into the finals. Donnie was in the same spot. He had two chances to make it into the finals. Not such a bad deal after all.

That's one of the best evaluations so far. Anyone playing for the hot seat has twice the chance of getting into the finals.

Also for some reason, a true DE in the finals seems too amateurish to me . . .

It will be probably even a bigger shock to many if seed incentive is used just like in many professional sports. Highest seeded player is matched with the lowest seeded player in every round.

I'm sorry and I'm not knocking the way today's tournaments are run. The reason tournaments took on the last race, one race, format was to accommodate television and possibly big money pay-outs. I'm not seeing the television coverage and the pay-outs aren't yet out of sight.

If the field was full at the U. S. Open, 256 players. Two hundred and fifty four players would have lost two matches before they were eliminated. If you can accommodate all of those players. Why are the final two players not given the same courtesy?

You shouldn't be penalized for going to the hot seat unbeaten. It should be an advantage you have earned.

I know the case can be made that you don't have to play if you don't like the format. I also know the people with the gold, make the rules. Maybe they should reconsider the final format. It's far to prestigious an event and title to let a player that has only lost one match walk away with such an empty feeling.

These are only my thoughts on the matter.
