Guys,

Is it just me, or does the purse for the US Open seem kinda small?

Given that this is pretty much THE tournament on the US mainland, shouldn't the prize money be a bit bigger than $30k for 1st?

Please note that I am not having a go at anyone here, just curious that such a prestigious tournament has sucha low prize fund.
 
I believe the guy who came in sixth in one of the smaller poker tournaments on ESPN got $30k
 
And how many fans packed the arena to watch the poker tournament as compared to how many fans watch a pool tournament?

Where do you think the money to pay the players comes from?

You said it all Jake. I've been trying to make that point for a long time now. When you see pool on TV, you get a glimpse of the audience and they're all players or people in the business. It's a good thing they don't show a wide shot of all the fans because it would probably be kind of pathetic.

I was lucky enough to go the WPC this year at Cardiff for the last three days. They packed both the main table and secondary table out for each session. In saying that that though, the tickets for everything but the final were free. Money was being made from the TV coverage rather than the gate.

Why is the US Open so unpopular with the fans? I noticed on the website that to get decent tickets it cost $200pp. Could this be the reason? Is it the location of the tourney?

Did I have the honor of meeting you at WPC? Anyway, to answer your question. Any big tournament needs Live TV coverage but the promoters will be facing a greater financial risk. The chances of big commercial sponsors signing up is low if the promoter couldn't show them a signed contract for TV airtime and tv airtime costs a lot of money. Money that the promoter has to shell out upfront then have to wait for payment from commercial sponsors, should there be any, to be paid in 30, 45 or 60 days after the airing. To produce a tournament like WPC probably costs $1.5M-$2M. Is anybody out there with spare change to capitalize one?
 
I happen to be watching ESPN on TV this morning, Thornfeldt and Corr, and there are a lot of empty seats. But the girls are really playing bad in this match. They both seem to be having a case of the nerves missing pretty easy shots.

But they do have a pretty nice setup for spectators in Vegas, the Riveria Hotel. Looks like they have bleacher seats all the way around the table. I wonder how much they charge for seats? But they do have a lot of people there.

Now they are showing the final match with Allison and Corr and it looks like the place is pretty much filled up.

Too bad there are not more arenas like this where the men could perform.
