Because of needing to shut down in a full DOS prompt, I had to have a Windows 98 operating system as opposed to the Windows XP. Windows XP gives a DOS prompt, but it doesn't work properly with my transcription software. I got a Pentium 3 Hewlett-Packard with 256 RAM, a 56K modem AND a high-speed connection slot for hotels, 14.1 screen, and 6.0 hard drive. For $379 plus tax, I think I got a great deal. I loaded everything up, and it is actually FASTER than my desktop computer with 512 MB SyncDRAM whatever the hell that is.
It's hard to believe in this day and age, but many of my counterparts in D.C. who transcribe are still using WordPerfect 5.1 in DOS. The transcription industry seems to be stuck in the dark ages when it comes to high tech, but when you have to take your hands off the keyboard and use a mouse, it slows down the page production. Court reporters get paid by the page.
I like being able to take my work on the road, and this laptop is going to provide me an opportunity to make money. PLUS, I will be giving daily updates while I'm at the Open for the AzBilliards' inquiring minds back home!
