Hugo Patino conquered Khalil Diab 40 to 38 in a defensive thriller. With Patino stuck at 38 and Diab at 36, the two players traded safe positions for several innings, then Diab score two to tie the game, but he missed the next shot by a whisker, and Patino ended Diab's championship hopes with a run of 2 and out.

Mazin Shooni crushed Miguel Torres 40 to 23, and Pedro Piedrabuena reminded everyone why he is a 4-time champion with a 40-13 whipping of Michael Kang in 16 innings.

The two Chos battled it out on table four, and, as the joke goes, Cho won. (Sonny over Jae 40 to 36).

The second round is underway....

Thanks, Dennis. I could not make my last post after the final games. I had to eat, help clean up, pack my bags and catch a flight back east. I have not slept a whole lot in the last week.

As everyone probably knows, Pedro bested Mazin 40 to 33 in 34 innings. Pedro was down early but was patient. He later said that he felt that he could come back if he stayed relaxed and tried not to do anything crazy on the table. I’m writing from memory, but it seemed that Mazin missed a double the rail shot along the short rail, then a bank shot by a whisker, and that was it for him. Those two shots were critical because Pedro was storming back. I might be wrong, but that was my impression.

I tried to count the crowd: easily over 250 and perhaps close to 300, standing, in some cases, 2 or 3 deep, to watch the championship game.

The results of the other matches are posted at Professor-Q-Ball’s website. For me, the story of the tournament was Khalil Diab (the “Fox”). He played his way into the final, just lost to Hugh and battled his way to a 6th place finish. He is a true gentleman, and, at age 75, is still playing great billiards. I had a very nice conversation with him early on the morning of the finals as I vacuumed the tables for the final day. It was 7:00 a.m. and he and I were the only ones in the Cohiba room. His family owned and operated billiard rooms in Egypt. He was educated in the United States, went back to Egypt, then to Europe for a year or two, then back to the United States, where he’s lived for over 45 years. His daughter watched the first couple of days of the tournament. I hope he enjoyed playing as much as I enjoyed watching him.

I hope my news dispatches helped everyone keep track of the tournament. There is a lot to do behind the scenes of a major tournament, but I did my best to run up to my room to make posts.

Thank Andy J. for a Final update.

Hopefully the spectators at other 3C Event will continue to draw larger crowd.

With all on Paul Frankel plate... maybe he will add a player profile section to his magazine... Khalil Diab (the “Fox”) story would be interest to read.

Again Thank for the lastest update and keeping AZ info.

NO sleep......who could imagine that ?????
Actually watched you on live stream cleaning tables at least once......tap tap tap.......I would not worry too much about the critcism about the timelyness of the information......if people really wanted to know what was happening in real time they should have been there. But then we live in Amerika, the land of INSTANT GRATIFICATION.

How many in the audience were new faces or were most just members of the choir? Just curious if you have guess.

Cheerzzzzz........ddd
