Use Of Break/Jump Cues During Tourn. Play ?

I'm sure this topic had been discussed previously.... if so I missed it !!!

Several of my customers are telling me sorted stories about what is legal and what is not when it comes to using Break/Jump cues in tournaments and on the tour....

Will someone please give me an offical ruling on what is exactly legal as far as weight, length and tip and if you are restricted to jumping with your playing cue only ???

This is getting very confusing and I can't seem to get a straight answer !

The main reason for my questioning, is this will effect how I build future B/J cues and how they are geared up as far as legalities are concerned....

Also has anyone heard of any near future plans to outlaw these cues or modifications to them ???

Your insight and knowlege would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks, Eddie Wheat

Build a b/j with 2 shafts....... 1 with a Phenolic or g10 or whatever and one with a leather tip.........problem solved!

Ah yeah.... thanks but that wasn't exactly the kind of info. I was looking for !!!!

Interesting suggestion though..... but it would jack up the price of the cue and take up another slot in the case as well !

Hi Eddie,

One of the problems with pool is that there is no one body that makes the rules. The ones most often cited were written by the World Pool Association and the BCA...which seems to adopt most of the WPA rules as they have for cue specs.

But tournament promoters...pro and amateur alike, can and do make their own rules...such as at Derby city where no jump cues are allowed and if memory serves (and it may not) no phenolic tip break cues.

So anyone who thinks there is one standard set of rules on jump cues or jumping in general is mistaken.

Below are the WPA/BCA cue specs. As you can see, the minimum length is 40" with no minimum weight so, without mentioning jump cues in particular, they are obviously permitted.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Regards,
Jim

WPA and BCA Cue Specifications

17. Cue Sticks
Cue Sticks used at WPA competitions should comply with the following
during play at table:

Length of Cue: 40 inches [1.016 m] minimum / No Maximum
Weight of Cue: No minimum / 25 oz. [708.75 gm] maximum
Width of Tip: No minimum / 14mm maximum

The cue tip may not be of a material that can scratch or damage the addressed ball. The cue tip on any stick must be composed of a piece of specially processed leather or other fibrous or pliable material that extends the natural line of the shaft end of the cue and contacts the cue ball when the shot is executed..

The ferrule of the cue stick, if of a metal material, may not be more than 1 inch [2.54 cm] in length.

Yes that's a big help.... and I understand the adoption aspect too, but does that include the men's restrictions on the pro tours and pro-open tourn. as well ?

And also I use my exclusive phenolic impregnated leather tips on all my B/J cues I build... so does that make mine legal because it contains leather ????

Anyone else who may have insight on this subject, I would love to hear from you !

Thanks, Eddie Wheat
