Valley cue ball

Depends on the valley table itself some use oversize and some use magnets I'm not totally sure about how to tell what tables use what

I had three different Vally/Dynamo tables...and all three had different mechanisms:

1. Oversized cueball track which sorted by diameter
2. Magnetic cueball mechanism (yep - magnet)
3. Fulcrum mechanism which sorted the cueball by weight...

The newer balls are the same weight as the object balls. They have metal shell. Check out the Valley website. They have a youtube link showing the cue ball compared to aramith super pro, same size and weight. I have two we use for league play.

I ask the question because I am curious what type of ball return method the local league tables use. These are high traffic tables and they get replaced periodically.

Is it safe to assume that a Valey table newer than say 5-10 years uses the metal shell? Or does Valley still manufacture tables using all of the ball return mechanisms mentioned above?

Cue ball

There are a few different type of cue balls. And what they are made of at what density'......... There is a plug ball and there is a mudd ball that can be used on valley tables, The plug ball has a hole drilled into it and there is steel inserted into it "cheaper cue ball" and then a plug is inserted in the hole that was drilled out' The mudd ball has steel fragments thru out the whole ball'. Inside the pool table there is a ceramic magnet block that pulls the cue ball down a ball separator then to a ball shunt to return the ball to the proper area

Newer Valley tables (say post 1985 or so), use a magnetic ball return system. There are various types of magnetic balls. The one used today is the "Green Logo" aramith. This is the one with the metal "shell" under the surface. It is the correct size and weight, but there are a number of problems with this ball that makes it play differently than a standard ball. As DLD mentioned, the distribution of the weight in the ball is not consistent, hence follow and draw work a bit differently. Also, the surface of the ball is of a SIGNIFICANTLY lower quality, making it very prone to chips, dirtiness, etc. Still, this is the best bar ball so far.

There is also the magnetic slug ball. This ball is also the correct size and weight, but has some *severe* issues. The giveaway that you are using this ball is a discolored circle about 3/4" on two opposite sides of the ball. This is where they literally drilled the ball out and put a metal slug in there. The ball rotates differently depending if the slug is going end over end, or about its axis. This can cause the ball to take some funny turns here and there. Overall, this ball is pretty crappy, but not to the point where it fundamentally changes the way you play position.

Hope this helps.

the magnet is not in cue balls it is in the table........the steel bb is in the ball

[I would have to agree with KMRUNOUT as per the comment on the green logo Aramith magnetic ball. I do agree that it was the best option out there until the new Valley Cougar Cue Ball came out in late 2010.

The green logo Aramith ball and the Valley Cougar Cue Ball plays different. Like previousely said in other statement, the green log aramith ball draws and follows through differently than most and the Valley Cougar Cue Ball plays more like a red dot.

It is harder to drive the Valley Cougar Cue Ball through an object ball like you can with a green logo aramith. You can draw it the length of the table pretty easily without having the cue slide fwd after contacting the object ball like with a green logo. Its seems to me that the Cougar ball deflects differently when looking at how it comes off an object ball with a half ball hit for instance, seems the green logo goes straighter than the Valley Cougar Cue Ball on a half ball hits.

Since I have played with one and compared it with others, I would recommend Buying a Valley Cougar Cue Ball.

Sorry for using the proper name for that cue ball so much, but both balls do have the green aramith insignia on them and I just didnt want any confusion. The Valley Cougar has a big green Cougar on it also.

Oh, as per the weights, weighed three green insignia balls and they all weighed more that the Valley Cougar Cue Ball.

I always thought the green logo Aramith and the Valley Cougar ball were the *exact* same ball. I find that they play identical. In Vegas there seemed to be a pretty equal number of green logos and Cougars (ahem...), and I didn't find any difference in play. I thought Aramith (Saluc) simply made a green logo ball for Valley.

I was of the same opinion. Our state tournament has both balls, semmingly in a 1 to 1 ratio, and I have never noticed a difference in playability. I do know they do not spin as easy as a measles or red dot on a 9ft. table, but I think they play pretty well. Much better than the bowling balls of some tables, or the cue balls that seem to weigh 4 lbs.

I originally thought they were the exact same also but just with a cougar on them until I received them from Valley and tried them out.

I also had a few other players try them out and they said they played different from the green logo aramith ball.

Maybe the green logo aramith balls are just old and havent been replaced in years and that is why its playing so different. Maybe its just that we are happy to see something new put on a pool table in our area?

I am putting on a tournament starting in January using the Cougar Ball and will get reviews about it from all different skill levels, cant wait to see what comments they have.

Anyone else have any experience with these 2 balls? I know the green logo balls, have another ball inside (like an eleven or another numbered ball)...does the "cougar logo" have a ball inside too?

Anyone willing to cut both open to see? :)
