Scotch doubles 8 ball is the best game for three or four players. if only three, then play one against two playing scotch ball. No waiting around to shoot your turn.
The most important variation has not been mentioned yet. Do you play "Open Table" after making a ball on the break or do you "Play What You Make?" This one variation makes the game of Eight ball dramatically harder to run out.
