veneer wrap question

I am attempting my first veneer application to buildup a wrap channel, and have a couple of questions for the people that do this method. I have read all the threads I could find thru the search function, but there wasn't as much info as I hoped. I have done leather wraps so I am familiar to that procedure, and also have a Unique fixture.
What is the best glue for it? contact cement or titebond 2? I have done some sample pieces on dowels to get a feel for it and found that using titebond made clamping it tight tricky as it kept wanting to slide. If titebond is recommended, should I add a bit of water to thin it? I haven't tried the contact cement yet, as my can of it has gone bad, but it almost seems that it would work better for applying the veneer tightly as I press the veneer down, just like a leather blank.
