Three days of preliminary qualification rounds paired a huge field of 64 players down to 24.

And with just a day and a half of tense battles, the 1st phase of the finals has been completed. Eight players now move on to the single elimination knock-out round for the championship..

The action starts Sunday with the following matches:

Merckx vs Kostistansky
Piedrabuena vs Blomdahl
Caudron vs Forthomme
Ceulemans vs Miguel Torres
