Vertical Axis

Normally I play with a lot of spin and hardly played any shots without english. I would say about 70% time I used english.

Today I decided to play a couple of racks cueing on the vertical axis as much as possible and it was a delight. There are so many new position zones you can access doing this. Now I have reduced the amount of english I put on the cue ball by alot. It really is great because deflection and swerve doesn't happen and thus the chance of the ball being pocketed increases.

I would advise a new player to experiment with the vertical axis and after a few months start loading the cue ball up with english. It is important in case you need to recover.

Centerball, a half-ball hit, medium speed, a natural position route to the center of the table with no obstructions to the right side of the next ball...Is there more to pool?

It certainly is good for every player to rediscover centre ball. I see a lot players who use english for the sake of english. It makes position play a lot easier when they learn the right spin for the right shot.

...or no spin at all! Stun shots and correct stroke speed improve predictable paths for the CB a ton!

I love the stun run-through. It's a very effective position shot when done correctly and certainly deserving of practice as is the stun shot.

As you've discovered, even experienced players benefit from centerball-only practice. I've played long matches (days long sometimes) in which neither player was allowed to use any sidespin. It teaches many things, like "natural" short position and pattern play, how little sidespin is really needed, etc., and also reminds us of some things, like how to aim without sidespin (how quickly we forget).

Even though I think sidespin mastery is essential to good pool play, I spend at least a day or two a month practicing on the vertical axis only.
