Video Documentary - Gambling, Pool, Poker and More

This is a biography of Amarillo Slim .. Some nice footage of Vegas in the Seventies.

I'm not sure Slim was ever the best poker player, pool player or whatever. But he always had a heaping amount of gamble and unlimited angles to go with it.

I don't know if he played pool but I was on an elevator with him at the US Open 14.1 years ago. He was there to watch the tournament so he must of had some interest. Another poker player Pug Pierson played good pool. He may have played in Johnston city at one time.

Many moons ago when the oilfield was ginning, Poker was the move after the pool hall closed down for the evening. Some of the biggest games had migrated back to Texas from Vegas, and you might see some World Series players in some of the big local games. They were trying to romance the players to come out west again. I got steered to a game at the Gold Nugget, and sat down with Slim and Doyle and some of the other legends who were trying to get something going before the big boom decades later. After the game got underway, within a few hands I had 2 Kings and knocked off Slim's 2 Queens and won a pot of just about 500 dollars and the game instantly broke up. I was looking forward to playing, but the sheep they were trying to shear showed down the nuts, and they were done.

I had the honor of watching Slim in action several years ago. He set a trap for the owner of a local room. The owner was a pretty good player and Slim trapped him in a one pocket game getting weight. I think the game was 9 - 6. I remember the bet which was 3000 and it was a race to 7. You could tell from the start Slim knew how to move and shot pretty decent. The owner was in a trap but outplayed it the first set and won on the hill. He lost the second set and smartly folded camp.

Slim was everything you heard about flashy, a big wad of cash, and funny as hell. It was a treat to hear the stories and one liners that flowed. He knew how to command a room. I was sorry to hear about the accusations toward the end of his life. But, he was definitely a character.
