I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The only league charters around are VNEA. Does anyone have experience in the VNEA and the APA to make a comparison? I have no idea what the APA is or the league formats. Any information would be appreciated.

Our version of the APA in Canada is the CPA. Same format, rules and everything. VNEA is by far a superior product, the rules are tighter, and the handicap system is less succeptable to sandbagging. (handicaps are not used during tournaments).
Ottawa is a big city, you may want to check around and see if there is a CCS (Canadian Cue Sport Association) sanctioned league in your area. They provide an excellent league system. http://www.cdnqsport.com/home.aspx
I've done a few years of both, and I'm inclined to say that if you are a good player and get on the right team, you can do well and have fun in the VNEA, but if you are an amateur and you have to go shopping for a team, the APA might get you a better experience. I think the APA is good if you're not super serious about pool, or if you consider yourself a beginner, or you don't have any hope (or urge) to try for the big bucks and winning the entire thing. Otherwise VNEA is fine. The BCA seems to come highly recommended too but I haven't tried it.
