Wanting to get back into tip replacement, shaft cleaning

Hello. I have been out of pool for about 13yrs or so and I have gotten the bug again. I used to have a Porper Mini Q lathe and I absolutely hate that I got rid of it, man, it sure worked well. So I am in the market for a new or good, used lathe.

What I want to do is tip ferrule replacement, shaft cleaning and I think I would also like to get some 1 piece cues, cut them and make them into a 2 piece cue.....I also want to be able to refinish/repair cues and replace the Irish linen wrap. I am about to retire from the Dept of Veterans Affairs in 2 days and I need a little hobby and I think this is what I want to do. The couple of people in my area that replace tips you can never get ahold of them and I think I may be able to help out the local players by offering this service.

Any of you guys have a suggestion on what lathe I should look into, or leads on a good, used lathe? I hope that is enough information so you guys can give me some expert advice!

I sure appreciate your time in responding

The best advice I can give is to buy your last lathe first. By that, I mean get the best you can afford now (one that will do everything you want to do now) and as your skills improve, you can upgrade as you see fit. I started out just like you; tips and ferrules so I went with a Cuesmith Midsize lathe. I’ve finished CF blanks with the lathe. I would like to get a Precision Matthews metal lathe to do threading, etc. but space and budget don’t allow. Best of luck with your new adventures.

I may have three used lathes coming up for sale in the next week or so. Where are you located?
