Warped slate fix

I'm not an expert that's why I'm asking this..

I have a gold crown 1 and one of the slates is warped. Could I take the slates and invert them face to face and rotate them to grind against each other until they flatten.

Again, not an expert but I wonder if anybody has ever tried this

I would say no, that it wouldn't work. I think you've got the right idea, though. Search 'lapping' in the this forum and check out the threads. Also, RKC has made a sanding device out of a 2 foot level and sand paper that looks like it works great for high spots. You'll need something that actually cuts, and a slate on top of slate would not, or at least you'd be there a really long time:smile:

If there is a dip in the slate, you can fill it with Durham's Rock Hard and smooth it out using a very wide drywall knife. Then you can sand away the edges to make smooth. It is VERY hard to get right, and will take a long time, and even then may not be perfect. I suggest just replacing the slate for $500 if you want to make sure you have a good playing surface.

Yes it can.
Most of the time it's either handled and stored improperly. slate in very heavy, gravity is king.
It's a sentiment of the earth created by tremendous amounts of heat and pressure long before our TIME or AGE.
Mineral deposits are common in which can also have a affect on a imperfection but not always the case. I have also seen slates that had been machined/surfaced with dull/out of balance cutting heads that have caused a nasty wave the length of the set but still be within tolerance because the caps of the waves are equal..
Believe it or not there is a curing process of the slate but not everyone follows the guide lines.
Not everyone understands what slate is...but they will eventually find out the facts if neglected.
P.s- I do not like gypsum based fillers to fill voids in the slate or seams .
Every single time have I removed cloth off a table with gypsum based filler that it has crumbled and traveled all over under the cloth.
