Water Buffalo tip problem

A friend of mine had a buffalo tip put on his break cue at the local pool hall. Over the next couple of days he breaks about 30-40 racks.

A big chunk breaks off the tip. The cue repairman said you missed cued and thats what caused it. No warranty on the tip.

After close inspection of the tip we see cracks in it like it's old and dried out.

Send it to Varney and have him put on a canvas-resin tip. It'll be the last time you ever worry about it.

Sounds like the tip had dry rot. That's when leather is rotting from the inside out while it maintains a dry or hardened appearance. Under these conditions, the leather gradually reaches a condition resembling the overall consistency of dry cardboard. Dry rotted leather breaks apart, tears and crumbles easily, and in severe cases can turn into a fine powder if stress is placed on any part of the surface. Dry rot usually occurs in leather that has been improperly stored in very hot or dry environments.

IMO, the cue repair man should have replaced the tip at no charge at let it go at that. I repair cues and that's what I would have done. I'd rather eat the cost of the repair and keep a satisfied customer than lose a customer and build a bad rep. But hey, that's just me...not everyone feels the same.

How tall did he leave the tip?. Cut down by 1/2 is a good starting point. Left to tall even way off center at break speed could blow a chunk out. Trim if possible.

This happens when shooting very hard, as while breaking and mis-cuing as stated earlier. Water Buffalo tips are very hard so have more of a tendency for this happening. If the tip is to tall this also causes break downs. The rule of thumb I use when installing tips is to leave them no taller than 1/3 of the tips width.

You are absolutely right that the repairman should have replaced that tip free of charge. Does he get much return business with an attitude like that? The tip only costs about .40 cents and shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to install if the repairman has any clue. I install around 2,000 tips a year and guarantee them for the life of the tip.

I've heard it's common with WB tips and a piece broke off mine (on my break cue) a few weeks ago. It's about the size of a pin head so not a huge deal and I've been breaking with it for 2 yrs. If more of it comes off I'm gonna have the tip replaced.
 
I tried it on my old BK1, I had a piece come out of it that literally looked like a slice of pie was removed.

Thats more or less what this one looks like. I didn't know this happens.
