Water In My Carpet

as some/most of you posters know part of my garage has been turned into my pool room. we laid a nice big piece of carpet over the concrete floor, and now for some reason there's about a 3' x 3' area of the carpet that is getting wet. i dont have any idea how that can be? nothing is leaking, no other area on the carpet is getting wet, nothing is running out from anything to make that spot wet, and nothing was spilled in that area either.

i know this is not completely pool/billiards related, but can anyone offer an idea why the carpet is getting wet? i believe it did the same thing last year also. it is somewhat close to where my central A/C thing is down in the garage, but the carpet right next to it is not really wet.

thanks,
DCP

I am not a contractor - just my own general knowledge of the subject and experience as a homeowner.

There can be a couple of reasons.

- If you have a water supply pipe running under the garage, it might be leaking. You can shut off all the valves in the house and turn off appliances. Take a piece of hose and make yourself a stethoscope - listen for leaking water in the area of the wet spot or on the main shut off at the street or at the house. Galvanized pipe is notorious for rusting out and a lot of pipe was run right through the slabs.

- Slab exposed to moisture. Check around the garage for a leaky sprinkler valve. The concrete slab will absorb excess moisture loike a sponge. When the moisture content becomes too high, the water rises to the surface and puddles (like a ground well). The things to do is let it dry out and make sure that the source of the moisture is removed.

- Water absorbs from ground. If your soil is moist the concrete needs a barrier to prevent moisture from being absorbed. When a home is built on a slab, there is a moisture barrier built in. Driveways and garages do not typically have the barrier. Driveways have adequate ventilation to wick out the moisture, but a confined garage does not, so the humidity is preventing the slab from adequately draining. If this is the case, improved ventilatioon or a de-humidifyer is needed. This should then only be a summertime problem.

Floor drains were designed to deal with the problem of excess humidity in slabs. They can be installed in a slab by an experienced contractor, but a retro fit is not real simple.

If it's at the head of the table, my guess is that you're "sweatin' the break" too much for those good rolls to set up a rack run.

Wet Rug

I too converted my garage into a poolroom. I found water in the carpeting twice. The first time I checked everything and came up empty. Got out the shop vac and rug cleaner sopped up all the water and let a fan run a few days. The second time it happened I checked all the usual suspects and to my amazement the holding take had sprung a leak. To make a short story long I came to find out the first time it had leaked, it apparently sealed itself. The bladder inside the tank went so the inside rusted out. It developed a pinhole leak and apparently sealed itself with a piece of rust. The next leak wasn't so small so it was easy to find but the damage was already done. By the way, I keep a dehumidifier in the room to keep the humidity right. It is also heated in the winter and cooled in the summer when I have the air-conditioner running. Guess what I'm trying to say is sometimes it's not the obvious, all you can do is rule out one thing at a time until the problem reveals itself. Good hunting!
