Typically, AFTER the last coat of clear is dry I dry sand with 400 grit sandpaper, followed by 600 grit. With each course of sanding, I finish by sanding with the grain. Then I take a small piece of 1000 grit sandpaper, dip it in a bowl of water & sand, with the lathe running. Again finishing by sanding with the lathe off & with the grain. I finish the sanding by using a wet piece of 1500 grit sandpaper. The water suspends the sanded particals & are easily wiped off with a dry paper towel. I then use 3 grades of rubbing compound on cotton cloths (with the lathe running),to remove any sanding scratches. Hope this helps...JER

The finer grit papers clog easily with sanding residue. By irrigating the area with water, often with a little soap in the mix, the sanding dust is flushed away, keeping the paper clean and lubricated, so the scratch pattern is consistent. It's near impossible to get a perfectly smooth finish right out of the gun. The final sanding levels off the miniscule peaks and valleys, for more consistent reflectivity once polished. Think about glass. "Smooth as glass" is the ultimate in shine, while frosted glass has a textured finish.
