What a difference the break makes.

Hey. I’m in a post/edit/delete mood tonight. So I’ll make it short and sweet. I didn’t realize how much difference a good 9 ball break makes until recently. After working on my break it’s actually fun to practice 9 now. I’ve always been an 8 ball smash them up kind of guy. That’s the way I approached 9 as well. It was frustrating getting out. But since working on the 9 ball break….. So much better and more fun!

What did you learn and do different now?
Well I’m making the wing ball regularly and usually can see the 1. That actually made for a better spread without worrying much about it. Before I was just stroking the break and hoping for position on the 1.

I don’t know. Maybe I just went up like 30 balls out of nowhere cause I was stuck for a while, but after working on my break is when it happened. Can’t really explain other than that. Just started running out more. Like twice as often.

Use the magic rack and hit them 50% power.
The one time I came close to beating the pro 9 ball ghost was with this method of operation.

The wing ball goes, the one floats up to sit pretty in front of the corner pocket, cue ball near center table if you did it right.

It doesn’t always work for me though, just got to be in the groove.

Sometimes just thinking about controlling the break and getting a shot on the 1 will make it happen for me. I know it’s not some psychic phenomenon but the subconscious helping out.

I will find myself just thinking about power and/or a square hit and I’ll keep leaving the one on the head rail or somewhere else bad until I start to think about it

Glad to hear you stepped up a level or two. It takes some players a long time to realize you have to control the table and that starts with the ‘lag’ and the ‘break’. I learned pretty quick after losing my grocery money and having to live on oatmeal and soup for some months out of the year 🙂

It’s everything (almost) my break is horrible. Nobody’s running out packages behind my break. It has always limited my 9B game, by a lot. Too much.

Glad your improving.

I think there is a song by that name...

What a difference the break makes
24 little ounces
Made the 1 and the 9 ball
Where I used to break dry...

Thanks. See I was one that didn’t learn. I don’t like to take advice, and tend to do it the hard way. I can break and run 8 ball racks all day. But there’s so many balls to choose from in 8. After working on it seems like the 9 ball break is a pretty important skill to have. Just being able to make shots doesn’t quite cut it in 9.

I've been working on a new (to me) break. It's working way better than the old break. The key with the break I'm working on is that the 2 is always racked in the back here, it's some tournament/league rule thing. Wing ball goes, 1B can go in side, or preferably stays as a side duck. 2 ball goes up by the corners at the head end. Balls spread out well. One caveat, make sure the CB stays in the middle, because if it scratches the opponent will run out.

CB on head string, between 1st and 2nd diamond, closer to middle (2nd) diamond on longer tables, centered between 1 and 2 on 7'. Hit medium soft with the stroke that will instantly kill the CB. About center ball, maybe 1/8" below center with just a slight suggestion of inside or outside depending on the table. Outside usually gets the action I'm looking for.

It is crazy the difference a good break makes, if it goes haywire there's always the push option, but it goes haywire a lot less often with some experimentation.

That's what I'm talking about
