What A Great world Championship So Far

Wow. Down to the Quarter Finals and this World Championship has been quality from day one. And I still can't see a clear favourite, there are so many turning it on.

First and foremost, Ronnie O'Sullivan. He's beaten the two most fancied young form horses so far. If it comes together, only Ronnie can beat Ronnie. It's an in-form John Higgins up next, and if Ronnie wins this year he can be justifiably satisfied that he's had no easy games.

I'd always had Ali Carter down as an also ran, but the way he disposed of Hendry was as good as anything we've seen in this competition so far. A player looking like he believes he can do it. His next opponent Mark Selby just disposed of Peter Ebdon - no mean feat - and also looks like he's made the breakthrough in consistent quality and self belief that makes all the difference at this level. I first took note of Mark when he destroyed Darren Appleton in the UK Rules World 8 ball final. Going to be around for some time I think.

Stephen McGuire looks to have found a bit of form again. He was the scary newcomer before Ding and Robertson, but had a nightmare slump last season. A definite contender on his game. I've never really rated his next opponent Anthony Hamilton, but this year you just never know. I never saw Graham Dott coming either.

Shaun Murphy is the one who doesn't seem to have hit top form yet. That could be ominous. What an incredible cue action he has. It's like a greased piston on the Cannonball Express. Matthew Stevens is up next, and on current form would be my tip to progress in this one. He seems to be there or thereabouts every year. Maybe this time.

Of the old guard, John Higgins is starting to look like John Higgins again. His last opponent Fergal O'Brien should have been made to pay to watch. Higgins on form is a monster. That final win over Ronnie last year (Grand Prix?) was the best session of snooker I have ever seen anywhere ever. And it's Ronnie up next. Definitely the one to watch.

Two notable new faces this year also impressed. Judd Trump looks scary good for a 17 year old, and has the temperament you just can't buy. He says he never gets nervous, and that's the way it looked. Hardly surprising when you've swept aside everything that's stood in front of you from the age of 8 or so. He looks a shoe in as a future world champ once the edges are smoothed off. Somebody once won a big bet on Mark Williams being world champ by 21. I bet Trump is much shorter odds. Mark Allen looks like he'll be a genuine contender as he matures too.

My tip? If he hasn't peaked to early I've a sneaking feeling it's Higgins year again.

i agree 100% with everything you said I've watched almost every match,

and yes Trump is fearless, he looks like a surfer kid that just has cast iron balls, he will do well in snooker or what ever for that mattter with a personality like that.

Indeed, two awesome matches yesterday should lead up to some great quarters today. I'm gonna put my money on Higgins too this time, that 100 break against Fergal was as good a break as I have ever seen.

btw Boro nut, didn't Mark Williams have to be WC by 2000 and he did it in 2001 costing the guy something like 40.000 pounds?

You may well be right. I tend to blot out bad memories like that. I was wondering why they'd cut my electricity off.

i'm watching murphy vs. stevens its 4-3 stevens murphy is at the table,

to me stevens looks beat, its in his eyes, i'd bet on murphy, they are both playing GREAT but stevens has that self destructive look and i'd wager to beat himself, its the best match i've seen thus far.

i'm done living in america during the summer moving ahead in life, i'm buying a small flat somewhere in europe

I have to warn you though fatboy, we only get this kind of BBC coverage for the World Championships, the other tournaments are only covered by Eurosport, which I'm sure you're finding out kinda sucks. Might have to buy that flat in the UK, they have skysports over there. I wouldn't dream of living anywhere but right here in Holland.

Why do you think Eurosport sucks?
i`m off to watch Ronnie vs. John which starts in next 5 minutes.Joe Johnson is co-commentator and this for me is the final before final. My bet would be on John but you never know with ronnie.the only one who can beat ronnie is ronnie. We shall see

You brits get Joe Johnson, we get Joe Schmoe. That's why it KINDA sucks.
Whenever Bjorn Haneveer joins the commentary team, it becomes bareble.

In the early days of Sky you could choose your language on Eurosport. I found it funny sometimes to switch around from the reasonably informed opinions and knowing when to STFU of the British commentary over to the manic Italian or French, who clearly needed to share every nuance to an totally uninformed public, as well as discussing what car they drove and what they had planned for the weekend. You couldn't hear the scores for the incessant chatter, or the outburst of amazement at the most mundane of shots. They've come a long way. Not least in taking the unadulterated BBC video feed, which explains the quality.

I'm thinking about Munich, I spent 3 months here last year. I'm a car guy I have a nice stable of Exotic cars that like to go fast, I just want a small flat here, its in the center of Europe thus its convenient to travel to and from, I dont want to live in a huge city, i do now in LA which I love, and I live in vegas too so this would be a 3rd home.

I know what you mean, I live 10 miles from the Autobahn. Nothing like flooring it without worrying. It won't last forever, maybe another 5-10 years. You're sure to find some pretty good shooters there too.

frame 20 murphy vs. stevens was great, murphy was flat last night, but sharp today, he is in alot of trouble but 3-1 in the morning session, i'd still make a small wager on him. stevens has that look of self destruction. I know he is very expericed but that dosent matter if you beat your self.

right now i like higgens to win it all.

I haven't seen a lot of this match, but if you're talking about a furrowed brow giving the impression of quizical disgust after every shot, that's just Matthew Stevens.

wow i would have won a pile i liked shaun this morning after i saw his first pot, he was well behind, but i would have still bet more on him, he was just flat last night, frame 20 was the turning point, i would have bet more after that frame too. I wouldnt be betting on any other matches havent seen anything that I liked. I pick my spots carefully-been doing it for years. I have been to tournments and not wagered a penny, i edont gamble just to gamble, I have to see "something" and I did there, I watched stevens in his prior matches. he was ready to break down.

It's getting close for Higgings, he's leading Ronnie 12-7 first to 13, but Ronnie is well ahead in this frame, looks like 12-8. John wrapped it up 12-10, Ronnie was catching a gear, could have gone both ways in the end.

That's the start of Ronnies summer holidays then. I haven't been able to see much of this lately but it sounds like Higgins is picking up speed as the event progresses. Could he win it?

Quite frankly, at this point, could he lose it? I don't think so. But...look at my vcash, what do I know?
