What are the springs for?

I got a Whitten Cue Case (2x4) with a cue I bought on ebay. I'm going to sell it, but I was wondering what the springs in the bottom of the shaft tubes are for. All they do for me is give the shaft a nice ride. I was expecting that they would pop the shaft out or something. Am I doing something wrong?

Give them a little tap (on top of the shaft), and catch the shaft when it
pops up. Tricky, Huh?

One of my cases has that. I didn't even realize it until I bought it and put a stick in there. It is kind of annoying. I normally put the shaft facing downward with the butt joint facing upward. I pull the shaft out then I turn it slowly and carefully into the correct shaft. Once it hooks a little I bring it out and complete the process.

I prefer the ones that have a tighter fit. I had a Players Profesional Series stick I got when I was 16. I kept it in the back of my truck until just recently and it hasn't warped one bit. I think the other ones might not offer that protection.
